Wesleyan splits at Truett-McConnell and other sports news

The Tennessee Wesleyan College women's basketball team lost 41-40 Saturday at Truett-McConnell, but the 20th-ranked TWC men salvaged a split in the Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader with a 78-58 win over the Cleveland, Ga., school. Andrew Scofield scored 21 points and Tyler Burse had 17 points, eight rebounds and three steals for the Bulldogs (6-4, 4-0), while Shannon Smith had 14 points, six assists and three steals and Devante' Jenkins had 11 rebounds with 10 points. Rhande Haskett from Ridgeland High School had 11 points, eight rebounds and five blocked shots and Helen Simoes from Hamilton Heights scored nine points to lead the Lady Bears (3-3, 2-2). Armeka Booker, the reigning AAC player of the week, had 20 points, 10 rebounds and three steals for the Lady Bulldogs (5-2, 2-2), and Cody Houck had nine rebound with eight points.

* Erika Woodfin from Dade County scored 17 points and April Besley from Dalton had 10 points and five steals as Reinhardt University won 64-60 in AAC women's basketball Saturday at Virginia Intermont. The host Lady Cobras scored the first 11 points, but the Lady Eagles led by 11 in the second half only to have Intermont take a 58-53 lead. Reinhardt overcame that to rise to 4-5, 2-2 in the AAC.

* The Chattanooga State women's basketball team lost Saturday for the second time in two days at the Georgia Perimeter Thanksgiving Classic in Decatur, Ga., this time 88-73 to the host Jaguars. That made Perimeter 2-4 for the season and dropped the Lady Tigers to 7-4. They play Tuesday at Wallace State in Alabama.

Football

* UTC football coach Russ Huesman will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday at Finley Stadium, and the public is invited. Huesman's Mocs went 8-4 and won a share of the Southern Conference championship for the first time since 1984, and he was his peers' choice as the SoCon coach of the year. Attendance costs $10 with a meal, $4 without.
