New Balance of Chattanooga launches 990 Apparel collection

Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013

In a day and time when America has a little bit of everything from all around the world, New Balance is happy to share that it is the only athletic- shoe manufacturer still making shoes in the United States. Twenty-five percent of New Balance’s footwear is “Made in the USA.”

“That’s more than any other active-wear brand,” noted New Balance of Chattanooga owner Hal Kearney. “This is really important to our customers, and so it is really important to us.”

The local store is launching New Balance’s 990 Apparel collection to celebrate this great history. The new apparel collection incorporates many of the same design details as the ever-popular 990 shoe, with remnants from the shoes actually used in the apparel.

“Drafting off the company heritage of ‘Made in the USA’ products, New Balance is supporting the story of high-quality and detailed craftsmanship,” said Kearney. “The inspiration for the clothing line is the historical success of the 990, New Balance’s icon sneaker for generations.”

He suggests considering the 990 collection, which ranges from T-shirts to fleece jackets, and of course shoes, as the perfect Christmas gift for the patriot in the family who believes in “Made in the USA” products.

“This collection is 100 percent made in the USA,” Kearney stressed. “Each piece of the product was designed, crafted and produced in the USA. This line of clothing does cost a little more, but the garments are really high quality.”

The store is currently offering all “Made in the USA” collection pieces at 30 percent off. According to Kearney, more than 50 percent of what the Chattanooga store carries is American made.

“[New Balance of Chattanooga co-owner] Angela and I are big supporters of products made in the USA,” he said.

Growing up, he lived near the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., and said it was difficult not to have a passion for the patriotic spirit, though he didn’t ppreciate it enough at the time. “It’s not everywhere in the USA that you reside near homes built in the 1700s with Revolutionary War importance,” Kearney said.

With this heritage in his family’s background, he noted that domestic jobs were an important part of the decision to join up with New Balance as a private store owner.
