Chattanooga police said a botched robbery in a grocery store parking lot Wednesday night led to a man being shot to death and another man suffering critical injuries.

The identities of the men have not been released because family members still are being notified, according to a Thursday statement from the Chattanooga Police Department.

Police investigating the crime at the Bi-Lo grocery store at 4510 Highway 58 said a man told them he met two others in the parking lot a little after 7 p.m. to purchase computer tablets.

The man said the person with the tablets demanded the victim's money at gunpoint, while another person tried to pull the buyer from his car, according to the police statement.

The man pulled out his own gun and shot both of the alleged robbers. One died at the scene and the other remains in an area hospital with a warrant pending.
