GOP will ulitimately accept ACA reforms

There must be amendments to the Affordable Health Care Act, presenting so many problems for those already insured, and for which the president had said all would be protected. No complaints will be heard, however, from the millions who are uninsured and now have many affordable choices. Some had been denied coverage because of pre-existing conditions and family members excluded from coverage. Those without insurance have resorted to free care in every hospital emergency room, driving up the cost of health care, making hospitals increasingly unaffordable for seriously ill patients. Those admitted have borne the cost of self-pay or extremely high insurance payments. Most major nations have made health-care provisions for all their citizens. Those considering the same for Americans presented no alternative to the Affordable Health Care Act, passed by Congress, signed by the president and twice affirmed by the Supreme Court. In due course, Republicans will approve of every provision of health care benefiting our citizens just as they have done with the graduated income tax, Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare, all initially opposed, and often on many of them on the same grounds as the Affordable Health Care Act.

JOHN BRATTON, Sewanee, Tenn.

Put God back in our nation

In reference to the letter "Hate, fear are toxic for community," Dec. 12. I would like to state: Christians do not hate and fear homosexuals. And yes, God does love everyone. That is why He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die for us. Those that choose to accept His Son and follow His ways are called Christians. But God hates sin. The Bible is very explicit about this. Therefore, Christians love the person but hate the sin. We cannot condone what God condemns. We all know the story of Sodom and Gomorrah and what happened when God poured His wrath on them. We, as Christians, do fear the wrath of God. As the gay movement has grown and more people have embraced and accepted it as an alternate life style, the decline of our nation has also escalated. The evidence of this speaks for itself. And no, that is not all that has caused the decline. What are we showing our children? To accept Christ, follow His ways and obey God in all things. We really need to put God back in our nation.

And the list goes on

As I was thinking about the discussion of the City Council's decision to approve same-sex partner health benefits, and the petition response to it, I re-read Leviticus 18:22 [KJV]: "Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination." I decided to find other examples of abominations unto God. I came up with quite a list: eating shrimp, lobster, crab, calamari [Leviticus 11:10]; eating birds of prey (Leviticus 11:11-20), and unclean animals, including snails and tortoises [Leviticus 11: 26-31], and pork [Isiah 16:17], making molten or graven images [Deuteronomy 7:25 and 27:15]; women in men's clothes and men in women's clothes [Deuteronomy 22:5]: proud look, lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked imagination, feet that are swift in running to mischief, false witness that speaks lies, he that soweth discord among his brethren [Proverbs 616-19]; everyone who is proud of heart [Proverbs 16:5]; he who justified the wicked and he that condemns the just [(Proverbs 17:15]; he who has not restored his pledge [Ezekiel 18:12]. And finally, Jesus said. "That which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God" [Luke 16:15].

Tell the whole story

The Wednesday, Dec. 4, commentary by a Michael Smerconish detailed his personal frustrations with the ACA website, and understandably so. As I read the commentary, I thought this seems familiar and yes, this is the same Michael Smerconish that I watched on MSNBC telling about how he was he was able to sign on the (now functioning) ACA website and loves it! And there he is back on another MSNBC show telling basically the same story. Catch Up!

Christians like to use Sodom and Gomorrah to demonstrate how slaughtering an entire town (men, women and children) demonstrates one's love for sinners.

As a young man, back in the mid-70s, I moved to Boston and lived there for 4 years. Unbeknownst to me at the time, I had moved into a section of town that was heavily populated with gays. Back then, even in the larger cities but especially in Chattanooga where I was coming from, most gays remained closeted and we scarcely talked about or even acknowledged them, except to refer to them in a mocking way as "fags" and "homos." But in getting to know more gays in Boston and having some honest conversations with them it soon became apparent to me that they had no more chosen their "alternate lifestyle" any more than I had chosen to be heterosexual. I am not going to pretend that I have any answer as to WHY gays lust after their own gender and straights lust after the opposite sex, but it is abundantly clear that nobody CHOOSES their sexual orientation, it is something that we are born with. We do not need to wait for some laboratory experiments or numerous and complex psychological studies to prove whether or not gays are born the way they are. All you have to do is take the time to talk to a few gays one on one.

All you righteous Christians waving your "love the sinner, hate the sin" banner can just stuff it. The fact that you are calling something a "sin" that is someone's God-given nature is disgustingly self-righteous and only reveals your ignorance.

Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Con-man, I long ago outgrew the fairy tales of the Bible and have come to accept life on its own terms. There is no vengeful, jealous, obedience-demanding God and no eternal hell but I am quite certain that that "kingdom of God" you talk about is no more accessible to an arrogant, disgusting, self-righteous fool like you than it is to any drunkard, fornicator, idolater, or whatever other "sinner" your fictional holy book speaks of.

Curiously, conservative, has never to my knowledge said anything nice about the kingdom of God. There is often the list of those who won't be welcome but no indication of what might be appealing about the destination. Why not become a sales rep instead of a grouser?

The Homosexual and the Liberal defenders and promoters of Homosexuality insist that God condones the gross sin of Homosexuality and will not send them to everlasting hell.

They couldn’t possibly believe the Bible the word of God the word of truth for that lie cannot be found in Scripture.

They are only left with associating themselves with likeminded unbelievers and trying to silence those who would tell them the truth.

Mr. Bratton,

Why do you think the GOP will ultimately accept the ACA when the president himself hasn't accepted in its original form as passed? Even he admits its a failure when he has to unilaterally change the law. its time folks like yourself admit its a complete failure and it is not going to work.

Wow Conservative..."No Homosexual will inherit the Kingdom of God, not even one!" Have you had a "Road to Damascus" experience where God has come and spoken to you to revise what Christ taught us? Now we may see only this one class of folks standing empty handed before St. Peter while the following sinners have free passes?:

wife beaters and child molesters, murderers, liars and bigots, people who pocket extra change accidentally give them at the register, people who curse the one who cuts them off at a stop sign or red light, people who sit at home Sunday morning because their hangover is too bad to get up and go to church, people who say if you baptize children you go to hell, people who hate moslems, people who drive past the community kitchen and think those folks ought to get a job instead of standing around, people who judge others, people who get mad at dumb comments made in an on-line forum that perhaps 15 people read, and the list goes on...

You left out the Scripture, the word of God I provided which states that no Homosexual will inherit the Kingdom of God.

I have no authority. Do not be afraid of me. Be afraid of God instead. His word is settled.

Please read that this Scripture carefully and let God speak to your heart.

Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? If you will use an inquiring mind God will reveal Himself and His will to you.

Con-man, just a little fixated on homosexuals, eh? You are a pitiful, deluded fool. You have quoted that same verse about umpteen hundred times. You think that if you keep posting it long enough it's going to sink in or something? Think again. Oh, wait a minute....thinking is something that you dare not do. You are either incapable of thinking or just too afraid to think for yourself. But it doesn't take a whole lot of smarts to see through the BS of the Bible - most any 14 yr. old can easily recognize the many blatant contradictions, the incongruities, the things that defy reason and common sense. The only thing that keeps holy rollers like you clinging to it as the "word of God" is a deep-seated fear of death and the inability to accept the possibility that we don't live forever. You want so desperately to live forever that you block out your reasoning capabilities completely and cling to the only hope you've got, in the form of a fictitious book about a fictitious messiah and a fictitious God who demands obedience over love and compassion.

Oh well, enjoy your delusion while you can. But the truth is, you are not going to any place after death that's any better than where the fornicators, idolaters, adulterers, effeminate, homosexuals, thieves, the covetous, drunkards, revilers, or swindlers are going to. Death takes us all - the good, the bad, and the ugly. And if perhaps there IS a judgment to be meted out in an afterlife, then your self-righteousness will be dealt with then, in a special hell reserved for people like you who are too proud and too fixated to see the vileness of their ways.

Pastors and parents say they don't hate homosexuals, and insist they only hate the “lifestyle,” that is, they only hate homosexual sex acts. Then Christian kids, gay and lesbian young people, sons and daughters, commit suicide. I can only say that those brave, defiant pronouncements on behalf of God based on the Bible are hateful. Are they protected speech? Yes. Is it the free exercise of religion? Up till now, yes. However, when we casually disavow responsibility for the impact of our words on the innocent, and the innocent take their own lives because of those careless, literally irresponsible words–well, if that doesn't constitute hate, let's look for something else. I will no longer listen to that pious sentimentality that certain Christian leaders continue to employ, which suggests some version of that strange and overtly dishonest phrase that ‘we love the sinner but hate the sin.’ That statement is, I have concluded, nothing more than a self-serving lie designed to cover the fact that these people hate homosexual persons and fear homosexuality itself, but somehow know that hatred is incompatible with the Christ they claim to profess, so they adopt this face-saving and absolutely false statement. I will no longer temper my understanding of truth in order to pretend that I have even a tiny smidgen of respect for the appalling negativity that continues to emanate from religious circles where the church has for centuries conveniently perfumed its ongoing prejudices against blacks, Jews, women and homosexual persons with what it assumes is ‘high-sounding, pious rhetoric.’ The day for that mentality has quite simply come to an end for me. I will personally neither tolerate it nor listen to it any longer. The world has moved on, leaving these elements of the Christian Church that cannot adjust to new knowledge or a new consciousness lost in a sea of their own irrelevance. They no longer talk to anyone but themselves. I will no longer seek to slow down the witness to inclusiveness by pretending that there is some middle ground between prejudice and oppression. There isn’t. Justice postponed is justice denied. That can be a resting place no longer for anyone. An old civil rights song proclaimed that the only choice awaiting those who cannot adjust to a new understanding was to ‘Roll on over or we’ll roll on over you!’ Time waits for no one.”

When the Supreme Court granted women the vote in 1920, our culture did not collapse. When the Supreme Court ruled in 1967 that anti-miscegenation laws were unconstitutional, the fabric of society did not unravel.

Using the coercive power of the law doesn't resonate for me. But, when it comes to social change and fighting injustice, the time comes when it is absolutely essential. If blacks and women and mixed-race couples had waited for good people to change their minds, blacks would still be slaves, women without the vote, and interracial couples forced to live without the benefit of marriage. There are still people who would own slaves if they could, be content with no women voters, and totally happy with no marriage for black and white couples. There are people would turn back the clock if they could. Delayed justice is injustice. And all this using the Bible as leverage...It is time to move on-enough is enough-.
