Q. Whatever happened to former Pikeville, Tenn., Mayor Greg Johnson, who was charged in July 2012 with theft in excess of $60,000 and official misconduct following a state audit and investigation?

A. Johnson was accused of improperly spending as much as $250,000 in city money and announced in the weeks following that he would step down from his post effective Sept. 1, 2012.

Johnson initially was charged with four counts of official misconduct and theft over $60,000 in connection with the accusations that he spent the city funds for his personal gain.

On June 24, Johnson pleaded guilty to one count of official misconduct and one count of theft of property over $10,000. The plea reduced the charge from a Class B to a Class C felony.

On Jan. 3, 2014, Johnson will begin serving a 30-day jail sentence, on consecutive weekends, followed by two years and 11 months on supervised Tennessee Department of Correction probation, according to Bledsoe County Circuit Court records.

Circuit Court Judge Buddy Perry ordered Johnson to perform 100 hours of community service for the city of Pikeville and to pay court costs.

Johnson, 52, was in his third term as mayor when the charges were filed and was first elected to the Board of Aldermen at the age of 19.
