THINGS I WISH MY KIDS WOULD ASK ME

EDITOR'S NOTE: Barry Courter has a 23-year-old son who graduated from college last year and a 19-year-old daughter who is a freshman in college.

Q: Dad, what did you learn from coaching youth sports?

A: Lots, but the three biggest things are that it really is supposed to be fun; if the young athlete isn't motivated to practice on his own, a pro career is not likely in his future; and the car ride home can ruin a lot of athletes. That's when mom or dad generally undo anything the coach just taught and attitudes are created.
