During his official visit to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga this weekend, Robertsdale (Ala.) High School senior Alphonso Stewart had an interesting reaction to Saturday morning's snowfall.
"It was a big surprise, but I wanted it to snow," said the wide receiver from south Alabama -- Robertsdale is about halfway between Mobile and Pensacola, Fla. "[Receivers coach Will Healy] thought I wouldn't like the snow and was worried I would change my mind about Chattanooga, but I was really hoping it would snow."
Stewart, who had committed to Jacksonville State the previous weekend following an official visit, was in Chattanooga on Friday and Saturday with his mother, aunt and younger sister. He said the trip could not have been any better.
"Everything went exactly how I wanted it to go," Stewart said after committing to UTC on Sunday afternoon. "I felt an instant connection with the coaches and my mom felt a connection, as well, and that means a lot to me."
Stewart is the Mocs' 17th commitment, counting early enrollee Hunter Townson and transfer Channing Smith. National signing day is Wednesday.
The 6-foot-2, 185-pound Stewart, rated a 2-star prospect by Rivals.com, moved from wide receiver to quarterback before his senior season. He said he caught some passes, but mostly ran the offense and ran the ball, including a 237-rushing yard, four-touchdown game against Faith Academy.
Stewart said he was looking forward to being a full-time receiver again.
"I played receiver my junior year and I really liked that," he said. "Quarterback is fun, but I feel more comfortable at receiver."
