Cleveland State Cougars open with four-man no-hitter

The Cleveland State baseball team began its season Tuesday with four pitchers combining on a no-hitter in a 6-0 win at Roane State. The Cougars then went to 2-0 with an 8-3 victory in which they led 8-0. Thomas Huddleston, Brandon Zajac, Bobby Towne and Andre Wilson struck out seven Raiders with five walks in the first game, when the Cougars broke open a scoreless game with a five-run fourth. Zach Janes started the barrage with a single and ended it with a two-run single, with Chase Edwards doubling in two runs and DeAndre Allen singling in two in between. Michael Hargrove, Janes, Edwards and Cody Hiefnar had RBIs in game two. The Cougars totaled 18 hits in the doubleheader.

• Four days after they played the first game in their season-opening series, the Bryan College and Toccoa Falls baseball teams got on the field again Tuesday at Bryan, and again the host Lions pulled out a win, 8-6. They trailed 6-5 after Toccoa's three-run sixth inning but retook the lead with two runs in the bottom half and added a run in the seventh. After Hunter Tipton's 2 2/3 innings of one-hit relief, Kenny Knudsen pitched a perfect ninth with two strikeouts for the save. No. 3 batter Tyler Latham drove in three runs for Bryan, and Blake Johnson was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Gatlin Curlee also homered, scoring twice, and Cody Rhinehart was 2-for-4 with an RBI double. Adam Reynolds was 2-for-4 with three RBIs for Toccoa.

• Tennessee Temple opened its baseball season Tuesday with 7-2 and 8-7 losses at Maryville College. The Crusaders led the second game 6-0 but were tied at 7 in the bottom of the seventh inning when a throwing error led to the Scots' winning run. Brandon Blome was 3-for-4 with an RBI double in that game for Temple, and Dustin Crumley had a two-run double. Trey Hill had two doubles and three RBIs for the Crusaders in the doubleheader.

Basketball

• The Tennessee Temple basketball teams beat visiting Oakwood University on Tuesday, the Lady Crusaders prevailing 56-48 for their sixth consecutive win and the Crusaders (13-11) following with their fourth in a row, 111-78. They shot 58.4 percent from the field. Sixteen Temple men scored, led by Weddlens Beauvil with 14 points and PJ Whittaker, Joe Quinn and Elliot Johnson with 13 each; Rashaud Bell added 12. Timmy Wright scored 31 for the Huntsville team. Amanda Rector had 15 points and seven rebounds and Amber Charles added 11 points, eight rebounds and seven steals for the Lady Crusaders (10-13). TaQuasha O'Neal had 10 points and four steals. Temple trailed 25-19 late in the first half but surged into the lead early in the second before falling behind again. Down 30-28, the Lady Crusaders scored 16 of the next 19 points and maintained control the rest of the way.

• The Sewanee men's basketball program has six wins in a row for the first time in 15 seasons after Tuesday's 71-61 home victory over Hiwassee in a battle of Tigers. Brett Bouldin was 5-of-9 on 3-point shots in leading Sewanee (14-7) with 19 points, and Lewis Affronti added 14 with 3-of-4 success on 3s and 5-of-6 overall. Tyler Brown scored 10 points on 5-of-7 field-goal shooting, and Valentino Bryant made five assists. Justin Browner led Hiwassee (5-20) with 17 points on 3-of-5 3-point accuracy and four assists, while Kaseem Davidson had 13 points and four steals and Lazerick Boyd had 10 points and seven rebounds.

Volleyball

• The Covenant College volleyball team was one of 62 National Christian College Athletic Association fall sports squads that earned scholar team awards for last semester. The honor requires a 3.4 team aggregate grade point average on a 4.0 scale, and coach Heather Taylor's Lady Scots compiled a 3.42.

• University of Tennessee fans in the Chattanooga area are invited to a signing celebration Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Four Points by Sheraton on Shallowford Village Drive.
