Sewanee can set record win streak

The Sewanee men's basketball team tries today to win an eighth consecutive game for the first time in program history. The Tigers, 15-7 overall and 6-5 in the Southern Athletic Association, host Birmingham-Southern in their home finale after the 2 p.m. EST women's game. Friday night, Sewanee averted an upset by visiting Millsaps and won 65-64 as Tyler Brown scored 14 points and Robert Veal added 10 on 4-of-5 shooting from the field. That gave Sewanee its first seven-game winning streak since the 1975-76 season. The Tigers led by 14 points at halftime but fell behind twice in the game's final minute on shots by Nick Cortese, who led the Majors (4-18, 2-9) with 17 points. Brett Bouldin answered the first with a 3-point basket, and fellow senior Brown made the winner with two seconds to go from a full-court drive and dish by Valentino Bryant. Bryant had six assists in the game, and he and Keshonn Carter each blocked three shots. The Tigers' 15 wins are the most in a season since the 1997-98 team went 20-6.

• Cleveland's Ish Sanders led Carson-Newman to a 61-58 South Atlantic Conference home win Saturday against Lenoir-Rhyne with 19 points, and Cody Henegar from Marion County added nine points and a team-high seven rebounds. Sanders' 3-pointer with 1.9 seconds left decided the game.

Baseball

• Roberto Duran went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Brady Renner accounted for two runs with a home run as Lee University bounced back from its first loss of the baseball season with a 9-0 win over Rio Grande in the Tennessee Valley Invitational on Saturday. The Flames, ranked third in the NAIA poll, lost 4-3 to Madonna earlier on Olympic Field in Cleveland. Karsten Strieby was 2-for-3 with an RBI in each game for Lee (7-1), and Mark Silva and Jonathan Stewart each was 2-for-3 in the loss, when three runs for the Michigan team were unearned. Bryan, which got a one-hit pitching performance from L.J. Rowden in a 1-0 win over Rio Grande on Friday, improved to 5-1 by winning 5-2 over Bluefield and 9-2 over Georgetown (Ky.) on Saturday.

• Defending NAIA national champion Tennessee Wesleyan evened its 2013 baseball record at 3-3 by defeating visiting West Virginia Tech 6-5 and 5-2 on Saturday. Wes Minton was 1-for-1 with a two-run home run and Logan Dalton, Josh McCray and Brackton Smith each was 2-for-3 in the first game for the Bulldogs, Dalton with two RBIs and Jake Stone with three stolen bases. Travis Burnside was 2-for-3 with a run scored and McCray was 1-for-2 with two RBIs in game two, when Zach Fleshman allowed one earned run in six innings and Noah Piard got the save with a one-hit seventh.

• The Covenant College baseball team opened its season with two home wins Saturday against Berea, 4-3 in eight innings and 6-0 on a combined four-hitter by Micah Mabe, Alhanon Miller and Sterling Witt. Perry Rigby, a freshman transfer from UAB, was 2-for-3 with a three-run home run in that second game, when leadoff batter K.C. Simons was 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI. In the first game for the Scots, Scott Gillespie was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, including the winning run on freshman Braeden Lane's two-out single in the eighth. Veterans Will Cleland and Witt each was 2-for-4, and David Lockwood, Chris Rollins and Gillespie had RBIs. Alec Mitchell was the winning pitcher in relief.

• Cleveland State lost 7-5 and won 8-3 at home against Vincennes in junior college baseball Saturday. Cody Hiefnar twice doubled and scored and Michael Hargrove had two RBIs in the first game for the host Cougars (3-1), and Hargrove had a three-run homer and Chase Edwards homered and doubled among their 13 hits in support of Jeb Scoggins' pitching in game two.

Softball

• Chattanooga State transfer Cassie Lyons pitched a five-inning two-hitter and former Ooltewah players Jessica Morgan, Bri Shoemake and Sara Kelley were among the batting stars as Carson-Newman defeated Pfeiffer 9-0 in the first game of their softball doubleheader Saturday at Jefferson City, Tenn. Morgan was 3-for-3 and Shoemake was 2-for-3, each scoring two runs and driving in one, and Kelley had two RBIs. Then Shoemake was 3-for-3 with three RBIs as the Lady Eagles (4-0) added a 9-1 win behind four innings of two-hit pitching from Baylor graduate Kaitie Sims and a hitless inning from Lyons. Morgan was 1-for-1 with two walks, a run and an RBI and Ridgeland's Caitlyn Lance walked twice and scored twice in that game, and Baylor's Braleigh Angel was 1-for-2 with two runs scored in each game.

• Former Chattanooga State standout Andrea Dalton was 2-for-2 with a bases-loaded walk and two runs scored as Armstrong Atlantic State beat Tusculum 6-3 in softball Saturday in Savannah, Ga.

Football

• UTC assistant football coach and recruiting coordinator Will Healy will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeeting Monday at Finley Stadium, and the public is invited. Attendance costs $10 with a meal, $4 without. Healy, a former Boyd-Buchanan star who played for Richmond's national championship team, will discuss the Mocs' 2013 signing class.
