about Clay Bennett...
The son of a career army officer, Bennett led a nomadic life, attending ten different schools before graduating in 1980 from the University of North Alabama with degrees in Art and History. After brief stints as a staff artist at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Fayetteville (NC) Times, he went on to serve as the editorial cartoonist for the St. Petersburg Times (1981-1994) and The Christian Science Monitor (1997-2007), before joining the staff of the ...

The perfect politician. He says little of substance, commits to nothing, and promises us all pie in the sky.
He did say a tax increase is certainly on the table. On the table is OK if left there. Select council members carefully. Those with some economic savvy and not thinking all good things come from government are the best choice. No lawyers please.
Even the Times endorsement of Burke, last Sunday, felt to me as if the Times had its fingers crossed: Burke's a Democrat mouthing all the right platitudes, but his lack of specificity bothers us; as a minority legislator he hasn't had to do anything; we hope he's up to the job of mayor. (I say, if he doesn't run on specifics he has no mandate to do anything special, such as tax hike, sewer fee hike, two-way, or annexation.)
Satterfield for mayor, as endorsed by the Free Press; he may not have two years' salary to spend putting up yard signs, but he does have specific plans for the city and experience that suggests he can implement them.
There is a reason that Satterfield has not been able to attract campaign money. I don't know what that reason is, but I do know that money seeks talent.
As I said before, I don't know what kind of mayor Andy Berke will make, but he has the bio of a winner. Never to my knowledge has Chattanooga had a Mayor with the level of academic success as Andy Berke. That doesn't guarantee anything, but it sure does say something about his work ethic and his intellectual capacity.
Because we know he is ambitious, we can also assume that he will want to distinguish himself as Chattanooga's Mayor. We don't often get a shot at someone so talented, why wouldn't we take the low risk chance of electing him?
The other two candidates seem to be also-rans with no real strengths. Chattanooga has had too many also-rans in the past.
Another liberal, left wing democrat with a short resume....What could go wrong?
The city council, like congress, has to approve spending. The current council has enough rubber stamps to allow Littlefield to do as he pleased in most cases. The key to the city improving and being good stewards of the public's money is a capable council. Who will address the compensation distortions with office and administrative over paid and inefficient while fire and police are understaffed and under paid? Who will have an independent cost and benefit analysis of city owned businesses and real estate? Who can and will withstand the special interest pressure? Who will address the future unfunded liabilities issue? It is time to say good bye to all current members.
Will someone tell the liberal Berke and his very wealthy privledged family of attorneys that Chattanooga has already been renewed?
Exactly what about Chattanooga needs to be "renewed" ?
How about trust in city gov., seems to me that could use a little "renewal"?
As Andrew pointed out the Times endorsed him even though they admit they have questions about his agenda...in the same way another famous politican who said "we have to pass it to find out what's in it." Reminds me of my doctor telling me he needed a stool sample....first I had to pass it so he could find out what was in it.
What, a Bennett cartoon I like? Berke talks in platitudes and leaves all options open. He is a slick lawyer who is not equipped to deal with the challenges facing Chattanooga. Don't be fooled by the snake oil salesman!
Berke is in the pocket of Chattanooga power brokers. Satterfield is committed to combatting waste and corruption and he scares the fat cats in city government.
With the other two running for mayor, most chattanoogans realize they have very little options other than to vote for Berke. Those other two many find disturbing. They've done nothing but attack their opponents, but said very little themselves of what they will do if elected. How often has Berke said anything negative about them? That's revealing to the true character, integrity and values of an individual.
I do not live in Chattanooga now but lived there for twenty years.
These posters joneses, JonRoss, patriot1, BigRidgePatriot are the Nay-sayers and the dividers. I know Berke,he is a great person,he thinks in broad comprehensive long-range views for the future, not on the narrow minded short-term. He is interested in doing what is right, while working for the people, the area and the City. There are many things that can be done to improve Chattanooga's attraction and acessibility making the city more "people friendly" to the other states and to the other TN cities.` The voters have the choice of voting in a rebellious matter or voting for a continued inprovement under the leadership of the well qualified Berke
Satterfield has a very specific platform. The TFP has not been covering him so if you get your information from this leftist rag you will know little.
BigRidge, here is a story the freepress did endorsing Satterfield. He IS the right man for this job. Berke will just be more of Littlefield.
Our pick for Chattanooga mayor: Guy Satterfield
It IS amazing how candidates are hand picked on either side of the aisle.
carlb says: ...."he (Berke) thinks in broad comprehensive long-range views for the future..."
Give me your tired banalities, your worn out cliches and your huddled platitudes yearning to make sense.
carlb said "There are many things that can be done to improve Chattanooga's attraction and acessibility making the city more "people friendly" to the other states and to the other TN cities."
So what be those "many things" that Berke sees in his visionmaximos ?

Bottom line is Barack Obama is a radical Socialist and is carrying out economic treason. Mr. Berke is an unapologetic supporter of Obama. Berke sits in interviews and says nothing but has a snarky smirk on his face. Expect the next four years in Chattanooga to be just as poisoned and just as chaotic as Obamist America is now. All for the greater good of course.
I would like a better description of the vision for the city. One persons dream or vision can be another person's worst nightmare. Why was it necessary to increase the cost to live in the city 19% if all the great growth and progress Littlefield and the council brags about were real. Increasing the population is not a good thing unless it is with people with good jobs that own homes, pay taxes and spend money in the city. Have you driven aound and seen all the sculptures including the $15,000 Blue Rhino? Notice all the empty buildings and houses for sale when doing so?

Yes, I saw the endorsement from Drew. The TFP missed appointment(s) with Satterfield and appears to be intentionally minimizing his coverage. It reminds me of how the MSM minimized coverage of Ron Paul during the primaries. Drew is the only conservative on the TFP writing staff so it is no surprise that the rest of them all shill for Berke. I met Guy Satterfield a couple of times and still have one of his little blue flyers. It is time we have someone in that post that is committed to doing something about downsizing Chattanooga city government. Satterfield is the man for the job.

Why should I pass my observations to you? There are 15 days left before the election is over.
When the Republicans decided to be obstructive against everything President Obama WANTED TO DO in getting the RECOVERY from the effects of the 2007 deep recession. The actions by the Republiucans (enemies for the good of this Republic) alone should be called a "treasonous act" against the "Commander IN Chief" for if he had failed then what would HAVE HAPPENED TO prevent this Republic from falling into another great depression? Is this the failure that the Republicans were wanting to cause?
The well known objectives of the Republican Party of taking away and being against the Governments' role in helping the "Masses" after the private enterprise (Capitalist) policies have forced the working conditions, as in the unfair "free trade agreements" (global economy) and the fraud involved causing the 2007 deep recession. All of which have played a part in decreasing of the middle class workers. The "Capitalist" objectives would continue to force more people into poverty and then their policies/principles are against using our Government in helping the people with their existence. Yet, why are there many voters going along with voting against their best interest by voting for the Republican Party after they have told them what their objectives are against the workers and the people.
Come on, guys. This is like the Affordable Care Act. Nancy Pelosi said that Congress needed to pass it so that we could figure out what was in it.
Go ahead and elect this guy. There's a chance he might do something.
There is a process called gentrification in which, over time, "new people" move into decrepit neighborhoods and revitalize them as the older residents die, or have to move away because they can no longer afford to pay for the place where they live.
It's nature's way of solving social problems. People who work and prosper can afford to buy what they want. The others have to find something else.
The loss of US workers' jobs have been caused from the effects of the global economy and the fraud occurring in the financial systems, with a trade deficit of more than $48 Billion dollars PER MONTH. Now the Republicans are against helping the private sectors in re-creating the needed manufacturing/production jobs here while wanting to cut out the spending of our government which is preventing another great depression.
Do the tax payers in the States, Counties and the Cities really know what the "bottom line cost" that they have to pay in preparing the locations, roads, railroads, electric, water, and sewage for the implant factories? Yet, what would our unemployment rate be in this area if all the new manufacturing plants had located else where?
Carl,
Wouldn't you agree that the infrastructure improvements and tax breaks which made it possible for Volkswagen to relocate here were made AFTER VW agreed to do so.
The money pouring in to our local economy as a result of VW's relocation and expansion are exactly what should occur as a result of taxpayer investment.
Obama's investment in a failed battery company, however, was ignorant and naive. You've got to invest in things that are actually going to create jobs that will stay around, because there's a need and a market for what's being produced.
The lawyers who infest the Republican sector of Congress are just as stupid about business as the lawyers who make up the Democratic portion.
The first rule of business is that you have to sell something that people want to buy. You can't sell what you want to sell instead. Until Congress and the President understand this and do something to make it happen, investment in private business will be as useless as the money that was poured into "shovel ready projects" by the stimulus bill, which basically failed because the money was poorly allocated to fund existing jobs instead of promoting job GROWTH.

================= REPLY; prairie_dog, The Tennessee voters apparently do not have any fear of electing a "pig in a poke sack"? Just look at whom the voters elected in the TN 3rd ND 4TH US Congressional Districts. These elected people cannot make any decisions on their own unless it is with the Republican Party's approval. That goes for our two Republican US Senators also. When the voters continue to elect Republican Majorities to represent the State, it does not matter. there will not be any individual independent thinking. from the candidates. They have to stay and act in "lock Step."
alprova, regarding my words :
"There are tenets/doctrines of Christianity that must be believed in order for one to call himself a Christian."
and your response :
"Does believing God to be a mass-murderer count?"
=========
No, definitely not! Your words which I put forth again are blasphemous and would certainly disqualify you from acceptance to membership in any local assembly of Christians. However, they would want you to attend services in the hope that you might repent of your sins and blasphemy and accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.
"THE IDEA THAT WE ARE TO ACCEPT A MASS-MURDERER AS AN OBJECT OF WORSHIP DOESN'T REFLECT WELL UPON CHRISTIANS AT ALL. IF HE MURDERED NEARLY EVERY HUMAN ON THE PLANET, GOD IS FAR MORE HEINOUS THAN HITLER. YET CHRISTIANS ARE TO WILLFULLY WORSHIP HIM WITHOUT QUESTION. WHY?"
Why the charade of you claiming to be a Christian alprova?
Reply{ We know that during negotiations for getting the companies to locate, the facts are that the companies as Amazon and the global corporate private sector are not willing to re-invest, in the USA, helping re-create jobs without receiving "subsidizes and incentives" from the tax payers, both on the local level and on the National level. If the people do not have jobs available to work and make money, then they cannot buy imported goods norcan they buy "Made in the USA" goods or pay their increasing taxes for holding their property. What about everybody's utilities which are continuing to increase, while they are losing their income?
I do not agree with your insinuation that "the stimulus bill, which basically failed because the money was poorly allocated to fund existing jobs instead of promoting job GROWTH." The stimulus helped stabilize the effects of the 2007 deep recession. The jobs have been slow because the US consumers are continuing to spend their money on imported goods to the tune of creating a trade deficit of $40 to $50 billion dollars per month. Along with the obstructions by the Republicans.
Satterfield on waste. Must read. http://www.chattanoogan.com/2012/7/18/230526/EPA-Fines-Are-Proof-Office-Of-Internal.aspx
carlb little or nothing you say is true. It is pure obamism. Lies and projection. Just like Barry's very public hallucinations that we witnessed today.
JonRoss,
I believe the phrase is: "You're so full of sh!t, your eyes are brown."
Everything carlB has said to this point is true and you cannot prove otherwise. There were no lies or projection. You're spewing that grade-A, WingNut bullsh!t like a cheap spreader.
The only one hallucinating is you. You're truly a delusional moron.
carlb the Marxists (obamists) in Russia butchered around 50 million to achieve what you want to achieve economically. And the Marxist dictatorship eventually collapsed. Same thing in China. Mao butchered about 100 million people to impose his Marxist (obamist) dictatorship. The Chinese have now abandoned Marxism. The same story is now unfolding in Cuba.
You really need to do a little more reading or looking at non-Marxist non-revisionist history. You are making yourself appear very foolish.
JonRoss,
Every time you mention Marxism in reference to President Obama, you discredit yourself and make yourself look like an absolute idiot. The fact that you would even act like our current government is equivalent in any way to Marxism is proof enough of your delusion and ignorance. That's not even taking into account any of the other ridiculously idiotic lies you've tried to pass off in the past.
"You really need to do a little more reading or looking at non-Marxist non-revisionist history. You are making yourself appear very foolish."
Pot meet kettle. You have absolutely no clue what Marxism is. You have absolutely no clue what Socialism is. You are overtly ignorant in so many ways and about so many things. Take your own advice and do a little reading. Might want to pull your head out of Fox News' and Alex Jones's ass first.
You are truly a delusional moron. Bask in your WingNutting ignorance.

There were not any "hallucinations" occurring in President Obama's hunting grounds. The majority of the voters are tired of the Republicans' lies and the untruthfull bashing of Obama. Listen to the saying "your old dog will not hunt" for you. By the way, THANKS FOR THE best laugh of the day.
