Tennis Lady Mocs 7-0 after beating UAB

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis team improved to 7-0 in 2013 with a 5-1 win Thursday at UAB. That was only the second loss for the Birmingham school. To beat imminent bad weather, Thursday's match started early and with singles, and UTC made doubles unnecessary. Jenna Nurik beat Isabel Fernandez 6-3, 6-1; Kaylene Chadwell won 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 over Rachel Daniell; Kayla Jones won 6-3, 6-0 over Menanteau Moolman; Claire Mulyadi won 6-4, 6-4 over Amy Lowther; and Katie Polk won 7-5, 6-2 over Elaine Simon. The only UTC loss was at No. 4, where Caroline Faught topped Kelsey Coots, 1-6, 6-0, 6-1. The Lady Mocs host Jacksonville State at 1 p.m. Saturday on the UTC courts.

Softball

• First-year Chattanooga State softball coach Blythe Golden returned to her junior college alma mater and former employer, Gulf Coast State in Panama City, Fla., and got a doubleheader split Thursday. Gulf Coast scored in the bottom of the seventh inning and won 5-4 in the first game, but Golden's Lady Tigers (6-3) won the rematch 4-2 behind Haley Fagan's pitching as Marina Wilkerson completed a 5-for-8, three-RBI day with a home run and two RBIs. Emily Dagnan also homered.

• Cleveland State's scheduled trip Thursday to play softball against two opponents at Gordon State was postponed, but the Lady Cougars are still on for a doubleheader today at Shelton State in Alabama.

• Tennessee co-head softball coach Karen Weekly, who also helped and at one point replaced her husband Ralph at UTC, helped oversee her 800th win Thursday night as the fourth-ranked Lady Vols beat Long Beach State 7-0 in Cathedral City, Calif. "All of the credit goes to the players and coaches who I've been blessed to work with," she said. "I owe so much to my husband and co-head coach, who has been the biggest influence in my career. I have also been fortunate to work for tremendously supportive administrations at UT-Chattanooga and Tennessee."

Basketball

• The UTC Mocs Club will have a "Breakfast With the Coach" at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Wally's Restaurant on McCallie Avenue with women's basketball assistant coach Katie Galloway Burrows as the special guest. The public is invited to attend and order off the menu. Reservations are not necessary.
