Student art, art quilts at Athens Arts Center

Two exhibits will open Friday, March 1, at The Arts Center, 320 N. White St. in Athens, Tenn.

"The High School Art Student Exhibit" will showcase some of the best works from this year's art classes at McMinn County and McMinn Central high schools. The visual art teachers whose students are represented are Joyce Simpson of McMinn Central and Sara Gaston and Patricia Compton of McMinn County High.

An opening reception will be held 5-6 p.m. Wednesday, March 6. The art will remain on view through Tuesday, March 26.

"With a Little Help From My Friends" is an exhibit of art quilts produced by Sisters With Artistic Attitude, a subgroup of the Village Quilters Guild of Loudon County, Tenn. Members of the group embarked on a year-and-half-long project to fashion individual quilts from the pieces and blocks given to them from other group members.

Each individual created a block each month for another member. Then came the challenge as each member had to merge the contributed blocks of various styles and techniques into a cohesive and attractive finished art quilt.

The quilters will be on hand for an opening reception 5:30-7 p.m. Friday, March 8. The exhibit will remain on display through Tuesday, April 30.

The Arts Center is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Admission is free. For more information, call 423-745-8781 or visit www.athensartscouncil.org.
