Many Northwest Georgians will have a new representative and a new congressional office from which to reach him beginning today.

U.S. Rep. Tom Graves, R-Ga., is the first representative of the newly formed 14th District of North Georgia, and he will be opening a new congressional office in Rome that should be operational by the end of the week, according to John Donnelly, the congressman's spokesman.

"Georgia's 14th District is comprised of 12 different counties, spanning from Dade to Haralson," Donnelly said. "Given the geographical makeup of the district, Congressman Graves wanted Georgians to have access to a congressional office within a reasonable distance from their homes."

Graves will have the same office in Dalton that previously served the 9th District but will move his second location from Gainesville, Ga., to Rome. The Rome location is the same office that was used by Rep. Phil Gingrey, R-Ga., before redistricting.

By keeping the same offices as the previous congressman, the Graves administration hopes the transition to the new 14th District will be easier for its constituents.

"Constituent service is the top priority of my congressional offices, and I am confident that our three locations [including the Washington, D.C., office] will provide the exceptional assistance that Georgians in the 14th District expect and deserve," Graves said in a statement.

The Rome office's permanent location is being renovated, and until it is ready the location will operate in a temporary space in the same building, Donnelly said.

The 14th Congressional District was created as part of a 2011 redistricting plan that split North Georgia into two districts.
