The 2013 Greater Chattanooga Area Sports Hall of Fame induction banquet will be held Feb. 25 at the Chattanooga Convention Center, beginning at 6:30 p.m., and tickets are now available through the organization's president, John Farr, at 875-9282. Tickets cost $35; none will be sold after Feb. 15.
Track & Field
• Don Jayroe recently resigned as Lee University's head coach for cross country and track and field, and first-year assistant Caleb Morgan was named interim head coach. Morgan is a short time removed from starring for the Cleveland school; he's a 2011 graduate and was a four-year team captain and Lee's first male runner to qualify for the NAIA national indoor track meet. A three-time outdoor nationals qualifier, the Cleveland native and Walker Valley High School graduate holds Lee records for the indoor mile and the outdoor 1500- and 800-meter runs. "This is a tremendous opportunity for me, and I want to thank everyone at Lee for this chance," Morgan said in a school release. "We have a tremendous team, and we are all excited about competing in the upcoming season." Jayroe became Lee's cross country coach in 2007 after retiring from an education career and later started the track program.
Basketball
• Junior Shyra Clark from Cleveland High School had a career-high 17 points and seven rebounds in Carson-Newman's 55-51 women's basketball loss at Tusculum in South Atlantic Conference play Wednesday, and then fellow Cleveland alumnus Ish Sanders had 16 points and Marion County's Cody Henegar scored 11 with team highs of eight rebounds and two blocked shots as the Carson-Newman men (9-2, 2-1) won 67-56. Clark is a transfer from Austin Peay. Her Lady Eagles (7-3, 1-2) led by 12 at halftime.
• The UTC Mocs Club will host a "Breakfast With the Coach" at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Wally's Restaurant on McCallie Avenue, with women's assistant basketball coach Mike Murray as the guest speaker. The public is invited to attend and order off the menu; reservations are not necessary.
Disc Golf
• Camp Jordan Park's new 19-hole disc golf course will officially open Saturday at noon with long-drive and putting contests and with learner discs provided for first-time players attending. The Chattanooga Flying Disc Club will give a disc to each youngster present. East Ridge city officials and media members attending will begin competition at 12:30 p.m., and a random-draw select-shot tournament is scheduled to start at 1. "This course is unique because players need a wide variety of throws to achieve a good score," said Jake Nye, who designed it along with CFDC disc golf director Scott Homberg. "There are several long technical holes that force players to throw to a preferred landing zone to allow for a good look at the next shot." Nye said the course was designed with the safety of people using the park's walking path in mind. It has a par of 65 for professional players and 72 for novices.
