Gordon Lee wins pair of matches, earns a spot in the Class A championship

MACON, Ga. - Gordon Lee won a pair of matches Friday at the GHSA Wrestling Championships to earn a spot in the Class A championship. The Trojans will meet Holy Innocents Saturday at 5 in a rematch of last year's controversial title match. Gordon Lee began the day with a 60-16 win over Irwin County and followed that up with a 42-27 semifinal win over Commerce.

Holy Innocents, which had wins over Strong Rock Christian and Mt. Zion, and Gordon Lee were each named Class A champions a year ago after the GHSA Executive Committee ruled a scoring infraction had occurred in a title match Holy Innocents was originally named the winner.

Gilmer County, the Region 7-AAAA champion, will seek to defend its title after securing wins over Cairo and Cartersville Friday. In Class AAA, Sonoraville won its first match, 46-19 over McNair, then fell to Banks County, 44-18, in the semifinals. The Phoenix are still alive in the consolation round and will wrestle again Saturday morning. Calhoun fell to top-ranked Jefferson in Class AA, 54-18, and was wrestling in the consolation round Friday night.

Southeast Whitfield, after losing its first-round Class AAAA match Thursday, defeated Eagles Landing, 51-29, before being eliminated in a heartbreakeing 36-35 loss to Locust Grove.
