TWC, Bryan sweep AAC foes

The Tennessee Wesleyan and Bryan College basketball teams swept Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheaders Thursday evening.

Wesleyan won 70-64 in the women's game and 110-85 in the men's at home against Virginia Intermont, while Bryan's Lady Lions won 73-66 before the Lions prevailed 69-68 at Point University.

Michelle Davis had 30 points and seven rebounds and Cody Houck had 14 points and eight rebounds for TWC's Lady Bulldogs (7-7, 4-2), who got nine assists and four steals from Heather Gibson and four assists with nine points from Alli Moreland.

Kayla Orrick had 15 points and 12 rebounds for Virginia Intermont (8-10, 3-3).

The Bulldogs (10-7, 4-1) had seven double-figure scorers, led by Desmond Crisp with 20 points and Zamarius McClendon and Derek Triplett with 17 each. Tyler Burse and Shannon Smith scored 12 apiece and Dante Turnipseed had 11, while E'Jay Ward had six assists and six steals and McClendon claimed 13 rebounds.

Rob Riley scored with nine seconds left for the Bryan men, (6-11, 2-3), and Point missed a shot just before the horn. The Lady Lions improved to 8-7, 3-3. Their scheduled game against Hiwassee College for Monday has been cancelled, by the way, along with numbers-depleted Hiwassee's women's games Thursday and tonight.

• Lee University won a Southern States Athletic Conference doubleheader at Southern Wesleyan, 72-59 for the nationally fifth-ranked Lady Flames and 82-72 for the 14-1, seventh-ranked Flames.

Hollie German and Jenna Adams scored 22 points each for the Lady Flames (14-1, 5-1), Adams with nine rebounds and 4-for-4 3-point shooting. Karley Miller had 12 points and seven rebounds. Lauren Johnson and Ashley Cooper had 25 and 19 points for SWU (5-9, 0-6).

• The Covenant College men's team continued its winning streak with a 64-53 home victory against Berry, but Berry won the women's game 89-66 behind Chanlir Segarra's 29 points. Ruth Gibson scored 17 points and Jessie Blankenship added 14 plus nine rebounds for Covenant, while Morgan Woodward scored 10 points and Alexis Storteboom had 10 rebounds with nine points.

Sam Bowman led the balanced Covenant men, now 9-4 for the season and 5-0 in 2013, with 11 points and nine rebounds. T.J. Cox was next with nine points. Lee McCloud and Jonathan Abrams scored 14 and 13 for the Vikings (3-10), Abrams with four steals.
