Jamorris Gaines, who was added to the nationally ranked Lee University men's basketball lineup after the fall semester, scored 25 points and added eight rebounds Monday evening as the Flames won 85-73 at the program's longtime archrival, Tennessee Temple. Will Barnes, one of Lee's two Tennessee Tech transfers in the starting lineup, also scored 25 points and had six assists while Duran Blue dealt out seven scoring passes. Gaines was 5-of-7 from field, including 3-of-3 on 3-point shots, and made 12 of 16 free throws as the visitors went 24-of-33 from the line compared to the Crusaders' 8-of-17. Barnes also made three 3s, in six tries, and Steve Bennett had 10 rebounds with 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting for the No. 7 team in NAIA Division I. Lee (16-1) led 40-25 at halftime. Weddlens Beauvil scored 15 points and Antwan Ruise and Hampton Mack added 12 and 11 for Temple (8-9).
• Brett Bouldin scored 13 points and Tyler Brown and Valentino Bryant added 12 and 10 as the Sewanee men's basketball team won 58-49 Monday at Hiwassee College in Madisonville, Tenn. Sewanee is 7-5.
Soccer
• Tennessee Temple has added a Honduras under-20 national player to its women's soccer team. Standout midfielder Sonia Hernandez has enrolled at the local university and will join the Lady Crusaders for spring workouts in preparation for the fall 2013 season. She is the third player TTU coach Emmanuel Awotula has brought in from a July showcase in Florida of eight international players. Hernandez, who recently turned 18, had her high school graduation in November. She played high school and club soccer as well as on the national team and said she had 21 offers from American colleges. "Coach made an offer and I looked at his school and liked it, and now I am here," she said Monday, adding that she wants ultimately to go to medical school and become a doctor. "She's very smart," Awotula said. As for soccer, he said, "she controls the midfield and has great vision and the ability to pick out a player and get the ball to her. She can get us settled, and her creativity -- wow!"

• Carson-Newman senior center Kevin Day from Soddy-Daisy was a first-team choice on the 2012 Don Hansen All-Super Region Two football team for NCAA Division II, and Tusculum College senior running back Brian Marshall from Ooltewah High School was a second-team all-purpose offensive choice. Day, already chosen the top center in Division II among several All-America honors, was joined on the all-super-region first team by teammate running back Brandon Baker from Miami and Tusculum all-purpose selection Xzanvion Smith from Anderson, S.C. The 5-foot-7, 180-pound Marshall averaged 163.5 all-purpose yards per game before a season-ending injury on Oct. 20.
