Bryan splits two; Burnette honored

Bryan College senior forward Morgan Burnette from Knoxville was the Appalachian Athletic Conference women's basketball player of the week for games through last Saturday for the second time in the last three selection periods. However, she and the Lady Lions lost 52-38 on Wednesday in a league doubleheader at Reinhardt. Bryan won the men's game 90-82. Rob Riley led six Lions in double-figure scoring with 20 points. Derrick Walker had 10 points and led with 14 rebounds and six assists. Brandon Cole contributed 17 points and eight rebounds in the victory. Rafael Tyler, Robert Troino and Carrin Nash scored 12, 11 and 10 for Bryan (8-11, 4-3). Burnette's13 points, four rebounds and three blocks were team-highs Wednesday for the Lady Lions (9-8, 4-4) and she equaled teammate Kelsey Brooks with three steals. Burnette averaged 21.7 points, 9.3 rebounds, 3.3 blocked shots and two steals a game as Bryan went 2-1 last week. She ranks second in the AAC in scoring, first in steals per game and third in field-goal percentage.

• Tennessee Wesleyan swept an AAC basketball doubleheader Wednesday at Montreat, winning 60-54 in the women's game and winning 107-72 in the men's. The TWC women improve to 9-7 and 6-2 in the conference. The Bulldogs are now 12-7 and 6-1.

• The Covenant College men's basketball team ended its winning streak at six games with an 80-61 loss Wednesday night at Maryville College. Jon DeVries topped Covenant (10-6) with 11 points. Joey Danek chipped in with 10 and had six rebounds. T.J. Cox scored nine.

• Former Marion County standout Cody Henegar scored 28 points on 13-of-18 shooting from the field, and Ish Sanders from Cleveland High had 18 points with three 3-point baskets and four steals as Carson-Newman won 93-70 in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball Wednesday at Mars Hill. Henegar blocked two shots for the Eagles (11-2, 4-1). Another Cleveland graduate, Shyra Clark, was the Lady Eagles' top scorer for the third game in a row and added four steals to her 14 points in a 70-49 victory starting the doubleheader.

Bowling

• Nathan Kirby rolled a 716 series (222, 236, 258) to lead Walker Valley to a 21-6 victory over Soddy-Daisy in the TSSAA Region 3 boys' bowling final Wednesday, and Kylee Saunders' 628 paced the Soddy-Daisy girls over Walker Valley, 20-7, in their final. The Lady Trojans will host a sectional Saturday, when Walker Valley will travel to face the Region 4 winner. The boys' sectionals are Monday with the Mustangs hosting and the Trojans traveling. The state tournament starts a week from today in Smyrna with the individual tournament and the Division I team competition getting under way.
