Paul Barys, chief meteorologist for the Channel 3 Eyewitness News Storm Alert TeamPortraits by Mark Gilliland
Tired of rain? Don't fret: Forecasters say the wet stuff will be snow later today.
"Around noon it will transition to snow," said National Weather Service meteorologist Jessica Winton.
Chattanooga may get about a half-inch before the system clears out near 11 p.m., she said.
If the white stuff actually accumulates, it will be the first snow of 2013.
On its heels, Winton said, temperatures will plummet to the 20s, and leftover water on streets likely will form what's known as black ice.
Paul Barys, chief meteorologist with WRCB-TV Channel 3, said colder air will slide in by afternoon and evening.
"Temperatures will be falling through the afternoon," he said. "There could be some accumulations in the higher elevations, with just a dusting in the valleys."
Locally, the Blue Ridge mountains have the best chance for snow accumulation with Barys expecting 1 to 3 inches there.
By the weekend, he said, it will be much drier, but cold -- with normal winter temperatures returning.
