Winter weather tile

Tonight's weather is taking an icy turn and Chattanooga is headed for a snowy evening.

A winter weather advisory suggests 1 to 2 inches of snow possible.

"There may be some sleet in there as well," said Tim Doyle, meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Morristown, Tenn. "There will be some slick spots, especially lower areas where water collects."

The city's Public Works Department is preparing for these potentially icy conditions by pretreating area bridges with brine. They do not foresee any road closures at this time. In Signal Mountain, workers are prepping hills and major roads with a thin layer of salt.

Ken Flynn, director of operations for Region 2 of the Tennessee Department of Transportation, said they have eight trucks out in Hamilton County presalting the roads that tend to freeze first. They will be monitoring the area through the night.

"We've got a pretty good sized force waiting and watching," Flynn said.

Temperatures are expected to fall from around 40 degrees to the mid-20s.

It'll be a blustery night as well, with winds of 15 to 20 mph and some gusts up to 40 mph.

But the wintry weather is expected to disappear as quickly as it arrived. Tomorrow's forecast is sunny with highs reaching the upper 40s by late morning.
