Josh Nelms falls in semi at state match play

Former Hixson resident Josh Nelms of Spring Hill, Tenn., lost his semifinal match to Hunter Kraus of Germantown in the Tennessee Match Play Championship on Sunday at the Nashville Golf & Athletic Club at Brentwood. He was the 2006 champion. Kraus advanced to the final but lost the title match 4 and 3 to incoming Oklahoma State golfer Zachary Ollsen of Cordova. In the Senior Match Play final, Buzz Fly of Memphis beat Chuckey’s Mike Freels 2 and 1 for the championship

Auto Racing

• Jason Hiett of Oxford, Ala., won the Firecracker 50 Super Late Model race Saturday night at Fort Payne Motor Speedway and got $3,000. Aaron Ridley of Chatsworth, Ga., was second with Brandon Kinzer of Allen, Ky., third. Jake Knowles of Tyrone, Ga.; Chris Wilson of Crossville, Tenn., and Robert Gant of Pisgah, Ala., completed the top six.
