City of Chattanooga passes first read of urban chicken ordinance

Chattanooga City Council members voted today to approve the first reading of an amended animal permit ordinance that would allow urban chickens to be kept in single family dwellings in Chattanooga.

However, per the passed ordinance, residents can only keep chickens if all neighbors who share property lines with them sign off on the initial application.

Council members Jerry Mitchell, Chip Henderson, Russell Gilbert, Moses Freeman, Chris Anderson and Yusuf Hakeem voted to approve the ordinance.

Council members Ken Smith, Larry Grohn and Carol Berz voted against it.
