Brick sculptures of students adorn the walls outside of the old Red Bank High School auditorium today in Red Bank, Tenn. The school is being torn down, but officials are considering ways to save the sculptures.

At least one piece of Red Bank Middle School may survive the building's demolition, thanks to a last-ditch community effort.

The middle school building on Dayton Boulevard was formerly Red Bank High. But that building is being replaced with a new middle school opening in August on Morrison Springs Road behind the current high school.

Before it's gone, community members and alumni are rallying to save the white brick mosaic of two students that has for decades been a Red Bank landmark.

The triangular figures of a boy and girl are simple in shape and appearance. But locals say they're meaningful pieces of the community's history.

"Because it's always been there. Or it seems like it's always been there," said Red Bank alumni Mike Congdon.

Volunteers have enlisted a contractor who also graduated from the school to help take apart the brick inlay piece by piece. They'll need about $8,000 to cover the costs of materials and moving the bricks.

Organizers are asking the community to send donations to Red Bank City Hall, 3117 Dayton Blvd., within the coming days.
