Holiday crashes claim 14 victims

ATLANTA- Georgia State Patrol officials say 10 people were killed in crashes during the July Fourth holiday travel period, and Alabama public safety officials say four people were killed in crashes there.

Georgia troopers say they investigated 785 traffic crashes that resulted in 374 injuries during the holiday period, which began at 6 p.m. Wednesday and ended Sunday at midnight.

Aside from the crashes and fatalities, state patrol officials say more than 300 people were arrested for driving under the influence during the period.

In Alabama, the holiday travel period began at 12:01 a.m. Thursday and ended at midnight Sunday. State patrol officials said they investigated 434 traffic crashes that resulted in 154 injuries. The four fatalities don't include accidents that were investigated by other law enforcement agencies.

Authorities said they issued 2,126 speeding citations, 607 seatbelt and child restraint citations and arrested 59 people for driving under the influence.

Chatsworth team wins archery meet

An archery team from a Chatsworth, Ga., elementary school has won a world competition.

State officials said Woodlawn Elementary School captured its second world title last week by winning the elementary division at the National Archery in the Schools Program World Tournament. That competition was held in St. Louis.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources said Woodlawn won a national championship in 2011 and a world champion title in 2010.

More than 1,800 Georgia archers competed in state and regional archery tournaments this year.

Inmate seeks execution delay

A lawyer for a Georgia death row inmate scheduled to die next week is asking a federal appeals court to delay his execution until the U.S. Supreme Court weighs in.

Warren Lee Hill is scheduled to be executed July 15. His lawyers asked the U.S. Supreme Court in May to review new evidence they have submitted.

In a court filing Monday, his lawyers said the Supreme Court is scheduled to consider whether to take up Hill's case on Sept. 30. They urge the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to delay his execution until the high court proceedings are done.

Hill was sentenced to die for the 1990 beating death of a fellow inmate when he was serving a life sentence for killing his girlfriend.

Woman drowns at Lake Lanier

GAINESVILLE, Ga. - Georgia Department of Natural Resources officials say a woman drowned at Lake Lanier when she fell off a dock.

Department spokeswoman Melissa Cummings says 59-year-old Marines Rosa Dillon was pronounced dead at Northside Hospital.

Cummings says Dillon's husband told investigators his wife -- who could not swim -- fell from a dock while she was trying to grab a turtle from the water.
