Obamacare

about Clay Bennett...

The son of a career army officer, Bennett led a nomadic life, attending ten different schools before graduating in 1980 from the University of North Alabama with degrees in Art and History. After brief stints as a staff artist at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Fayetteville (NC) Times, he went on to serve as the editorial cartoonist for the St. Petersburg Times (1981-1994) and The Christian Science Monitor (1997-2007), before joining the staff of the ...

Aetna has joined with United Health Care, two of the largest insurers in pulling out of California. It is time to be prochoice and abort this brain damaged embryo that will bankrupt us once it is fully developed and we have to provide the care it will need. It would take a miracle to make this patient healthy.

The intent of everyone having access to good health care is good. However, it does not have to be so complex and destructive to the economy. Those voting on this bill either way without reading and understanding it should be impeached. It was on the "fast track" as some stated. That is usually a head long rush to a disaster.

The president did not write the bill. The president does not have time to study it, he has to depend on others to do what is right. His talks about it are prepared by others, which is the way things are done by all presidents. His intent is to have healthcare available to every American citizen, a worthwhile objective. But, too many cooks will ruin the best of recipes and he depended on some cooks that couldn't cook and others that had their own motive.

Whoop-de-do, thanks to the sequester America is now only borrowing thirty eight cents of every dollar spent. it is likely congress will think they can spend more.

I wonder why a high percent of the recent increase in jobs were part time workers? The percent of people without healthcare insurance is not likely to change so what is the benefit of the AHCA? Oh yeah, I forgot, it will increase revenue by punishing those that can least afford it by requiring them to pay a fine but call it a tax. Thanks to the creative thinking of the SCOTUS chief justice we now have a tax for breaking a law, a new twist on punishment for nonviolent crimes. If you want less of something tax it if you want more of something reward it.

Our millionaire golfing President says his Wall Street buddies can wait a year about buying insurance for their workers, but the workers gotta be on time about buying it for themselves. Surely the GOP (for freedom, against O'Romneycare) and the Democrats (???love the poor???) can agree to let the workers also wait a year? Meanwhile, we add 175,000 jobs, of which 300,000 are part-time jobs that don't have to buy insurance for workers...uh, does that mean 125,000 full-time jobs vanished? Universal health care--wasn't it President Reagan and a GOP Senate that, in A.D. 1986, made a law forcing emergency rooms to accept patients? And O'Romneycare slaps a trillion-dollar bandage on this 50-billion-dollar cut. Did our liberal friends pull the covers back over their heads this morning?

Well...I see the chicken wing flappers are up early today, passing on the typical chicken wing flapping that can be read in the press, spawned by more notable chicken wing flappers.

President Obama has made chumps out of people over and over during the time he has been in office.

Rumor and speculation will be shelved in favor of solid evidence that everyone will be able to see come this October when the insurers will be rolling out insurance plans that everyone can choose from to purchase.

Today, this thread will fill with a rehashing of rumor and speculation. "Oh my goodness...everyone is going to have a part-time job, and will be forced to purchase their own health care insurance."

The ACA wasn't the solution a lot of us wanted. I would have preferred a system more like the one those whacky Aussies have. But, understand this, those of us - especially mothers, wives, and daughters - who understand how flawed our health care delivery system is - will take this over doing nothing. I haven't heard of an alternative system that would pass the straight face test. The only two alternatives would be single payer, or getting rid of all, and I mean all, government subsidized health care in the hopes that a true free market would bring costs down. Not that I think the latter is a good idea, I think, as a nation, we're way better than that. So, would I would like to see on this forum, are some bright ideas. And if you suggest tax credits please note whether or not you feel that all Medicare recipients should switch to credits, and how you would handle pre-existing condition pricing.

Yet Obamacare has found a handful of unexpected allies: GOP governors.

A handful of prominent Republicans, like New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Florida’s Gov. Rick Scott, endorsed the expansion of Medicaid, earning ire from their own parties.

As Obamacare’s popularity has fallen, the GOP’s own internal battles over implementation has grown.

The law’s latest ally is the same Republican governor who sued to topple Obamacare: Jan Brewer.

Now she’s so determined for the state’s House to pass the Medicaid expansion (and allow the state to accept the federal funds the bill promises), she’s vowed to veto all legislation that reaches her desk until the Republican legislature approves the bill and it appears to be working: Republican leadership has scheduled a vote for next week, according to reports.

Whatever one thinks of Obamacare and however it turns out down the road, to be a good thing or a bad thing, at least Obama took the initiative and addressed the problem of the uninsured. And it is a HUGE problem that needs to be addressed. Today. There are about 50 million Americans without any health insurance at all, and many millions more who have inadequate insurance. They are forced to purchase a policy with a very high deductible because they cannot afford one that truly covers all their bases. And that is not HEALTH insurance, it is ASSET insurance - to protect them from losing their homes and their savings in the event of a catastrophic accident or life-threatening illness that requires extensive and expensive medical treatment.

If it were left up to Republicans to fix our broken health care system it wouldn't even be up for discussion because in their minds it's not really broken. As long as their privileged butts are covered all's right with the world. They simply lump all the uninsured in the pig's trough of "moochers" and "takers" and forget about them. They think that the "slackers" are obviously not playing the game right or carrying their weight so they deserve whatever they get, or don't get, as the case may be.

Life is easily explained when you look at the world through your conservative-tinted, black-and-white, good-and-evil glasses and don't allow yourself to see all the complexities and the shades of gray.

But the sooner we realize that we are just another country among all the other countries and we are humbled into acknowledging that we are all in this boat together, we might open our eyes and learn from those who are doing things better than we have been doing them. We'll never be a truly great nation until we get over how "special" we think we are and we start ACTING great, not just THINKING of ourselves as great.

Funny you mention the word "balance," chatt_man. I have not seen any kind of balance coming from Republicans or conservatives. We have gone so far to the right in America, what with the GOP making a fool of itself trying to placate the teabagging extremists and the Bible thumping bozos, that what conservatives call "balance" or "middle" today is still far, far to the right. You call Obama a socialist/Marxist without even knowing what a true socialist or Marxist is. In fact he's more like a moderate Republican of old than a liberal-leaning Democrat. Sure, he talks a pretty good liberal game but he only talks the talk, doesn't walk the walk. Obamacare is not even socialist, not by any stretch. It's the old conservative model that Republicans were all in favor of when it came out of the conservative think tanks.

You wouldn't know "balance" if it smacked you in the face.

What does it take for it to sink into that thick cranium of yours that there is NOTHIING about them that liberals praise or believe in. Most liberals in America don't even want a purely socialistic society/government but simply a blend of free enterprise and a freely elected representative government that works primarily for the interests of the people, not the corporations and the super-rich. alprova you sources are suspect and use a lot of assumptions. Some interesting exerts:

states that do implement ObamaCare's Medicaid Expansion will reap billions in additional federal dollars.

Those billions will come form? Borrow, print, the money tree? It isn't taxes since they also say: ObamaCare reduces costs of premiums to millions of families and small businesses and provides billions dollars in tax relief – the largest middle class tax cut in health care in history.

They do acknowledge that Although ObamaCare hasn't resulted in job loss, the "employer mandate" has resulted in a number of full-time workers having their hours cut back to part time in order for employers to avoid providing their full-timers with health insurance......therefore the solution is?

This statement is a real jewel: ObamaCare won't cause 650,000 jobs to be lost as some of its detractors say. Job losses ObamaCare creates is from employees who cut back their hours, since they will no longer have to rely solely on their jobs for their family's health care. In fact, ObamaCare's effect on job growth in Government jobs and Health Care rivals job loss in other markets. ahhhhhhh I see said the blind man...Government hiring will absorb a comparable number with government hiring....now who pays for that? I wonder who will pay for those cutting back because they no longer need that source for health care? Would it not be a wash if they were needed and cut back would there not be an equal number hired? Who will pay for their health care in the future?

It may, as you think, be the best thing since sliced bread but in it's present form it will sink a lot of people and cost the hell out of others. The article did say..... About 26 million people are projected to be exempt from mandated coverage. It did not say who or why but they will not be affected except taxes and premiums if they obtain healthcare.

You know the saying...if it sounds too good to be true it probably isn't.

That is a full-fledged lie. I challenge you to find one spoken comment from President Obama referring to the "rich" as being "evil," that they "oppress the people," and the need to "redistribute wealth."

Now keep in mind that I want these quotes to have been spoken since he has been President and NOT a college student, because Cruz's father claims that these are comments he is offering "now."

"...He began attacking the press, curtail freedom of the press, attacking religion, confiscating property."

Proof? The man if anything, has been guilty of expanding religious freedom, but because he does not jump on the anti_Muslim bandwagon, he has been accused of being one.

Confiscating property? WTF?

"...Then he began instituting socialized medicine, and imposing wage-and-price controls. Basically reducing everybody’s salary to a least common denominator.”..."

There is nothing "Socialized" about ObamaCare. Wage and price controls? He has hardly reduced "everybody's" salary to any denominator.

The man's speech is hate-filled rant of lies.

"Raphael Cruz speaks of what he personally experienced from a dictator and he what witnessed during the fall of Cuba into tyranny. He knows the signs and the lies that are told to sell the takeover."

Well then, the man needs to hop a boat back to Cuba and spend a spell to remind himself of the difference between life in Cuba and life in the United States.

There never has and continues to be no comparison whatsoever.

There is not one credible claim in that speech. The man is just another Obama-basher like his Son.

You Sir might believe that all those warrants for emails were obtained for political reasons, but there has been no official accusation by anyone with the power to do it, that the President has had a damn thing to do with the investigation of Rosen or the AP.

If you were an objective person, and not subject to reading stupid conspiracies, you might have discovered that those investigations that are now complete surprise to Republicans today, were called for a couple of years ago and as late as last year, due to high level information being leaked to the press on Korea and other war-related activities.

Want to know why Eric Holder has refused to step down? Because he did what he was demanded to do, which was to find the source of those leaks to the press.

In 2009 and beyond, James Rosen was targeted because it was discovered that he had likely been sent a classified report(s) by State Department security adviser Stephen Jin-Woo Kim, whose trial is scheduled this coming January.

Upward economic mobility in the US today is much lower than in most industrialized countries. Sorry. Of course government redistributes wealth, that’s what all governments do. The question is how and to whom. (I personally find it ironic that most conservative leaning states receive more money from the federal government they complain about than they pay to it.) I looked at the websites you mentioned (advice, be wary of any websites that promotes gold as a prudent investment, it’s a sucker’s bet) and see that they are the usual reactionary attempts to justify robbing the working classes to benefit the already wealthy by citing meaningless statistics. I wonder how these sites would explain why the period of greatest economic prosperity for the greatest number of Americans (the 1950s and 60s) occurred when the tax on individuals and corporations was very high, around 90% for individuals. Today capital gains, interest, and “carried interest” (much of which is earned by “job creators”) is taxed at a much lower rate than money earned working in a factory, classroom, retail store or secretary’s desk. Yet we have high unemployment, a wealth disparity that is even greater than was seen in the 1920s and a middle class that is rapidly shrinking. How does that happen? It’s not the invisible hand of the market place, it’s the manipulative hand of the wealthy and corporations. Are stock owners and money managers entitled to lower taxes on their income than those who actually contribute to the economy? Corporations are allowed to deduct expenses for flying executives to meetings. Ask your congressman to introduce legislation to allow you to deduct your expenses for driving to work. See how far you get. Writing him a sizable check for his next campaign might help. A few more checks to other congressmen would probably also be necessary. No problem if you are rich. Government provides services which cost money and gets that money by taxing. Any taxes that one person doesn’t pay has to be paid by another person. It’s not that hard to figure out. If the wealthy were so overtaxed they wouldn’t be wealthy, would they? But they are. They are very wealthy. And they use some of their wealth to buy legislation that allows them to keep their money and make you pay for government services and laws from which they also benefit. And apparently they’ve convinced you that they are being mistreated. Don’t fall for it.
