Saudi princess arrested in human trafficking case

SANTA ANA, Calif. — Bail is set at $5 million for a Saudi princess who prosecutors say held a domestic worker against her will at a condominium in Orange County.

Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas identified 42-year-old Meshael Alayban as a Saudi princess who was charged with one count of human trafficking. If convicted, she faces up to 12 years in prison.

A hearing was held Wednesday. Alayban was not in court.

She was arrested after a Kenyan woman carrying a suitcase flagged down a bus. A passenger helped her contact police on Tuesday.

Police say the Kenyan had been hired to work for Alayban in 2012 and her passport was taken from her upon arrival in Saudi Arabia. Authorities say Alayban’s family traveled to the United States in May with the victim.
