Chief Dale Winters oversees the towing of stranded vehicles from the middle of Cedar Avenue after a flash flood inundated the downtown South Pittsburg area.

Much of downtown South Pittsburg, Tenn., including key highway Cedar Avenue, was closed down this morning as city and business officials focused on cleaning up in the wake of heavy rains and flooding Wednesday night.

A layer of mud covered much of the downtown area and some buildings showed watermarks two feet high.

South Pittsburg Police Chief Dale Winters spent time overseeing the towing away of flooded out cars downtown.

He said the city lost three patrol cars to flooding and City Hall as well as many businesses had sustained damage.

Officials said two people had received minor injuries but had been treated and released from an area hospital.
