Senior aviculturist Amy Graves shows off a new macaroni penguin chick at the Tennessee Aquarium, 1 Broad St.

The newest addition to the brood, born May 31, is the first offspring for parents Merlin and Sweet Pea, whose combined skills make for successful parenting.

"Merlin is a good protector, and Sweet Pea is very nurturing and better at feeding the chick," Graves explains.

Several gentoo penguins may still lay eggs as well.

The most recent count shows two eggs for Nipper and Flower, two eggs for Bug and Big T and one for Biscuit and Blue.

The Aquarium is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. daily. Admission is $24.95 per adult and $14.95 per child ages 3-12.

Guests can add a Backstage Pass for bird's-eye views of the nesting penguins.
