6 displaced in Oak Street fire

A family was driven from its home by a house fire Saturday afternoon in Chattanooga, Fire Department spokesman Bruce Garner said.

Several fire companies responded when the blaze was reported at 1709 Oak St. about 2 p.m. The fire started in a bedroom closet and had spread to the attic, the release stated.

Two adults and four children who lived in the house were not home. No injuries were reported from the flames, but one firefighter was bitten on the leg by a dog.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Teen wounded in shooting

An 18-year-old was shot and wounded Friday night, according to Chattanooga police.

Police were called to 454 Gillespie Road about 7:20 p.m., where they found Geonta Gaines with a gunshot wound in his side. He was treated at a local hospital for an injury that was not life-threatening, according to a police news release.

The suspects already had left in a car, the release stated.

Rock slide should be cleared today

Two westbound lanes on Interstate 24 are expected to reopen today after a rock slide is cleared, according to Dalya Qualls, public information officer for the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

The section in Marion County was cut down to one lane after a rock slide off Monteagle Mountain blocked the left and center lanes Wednesday at mile marker 138, Qualls said.

Tennessee Department of Transportation projections have the full westbound segment cleared and opened back up by 11 a.m. today.
