Jefferson Wells, CPA, prides himself in service to clients

Tuesday, July 16, 2013

Now in his 20th year of business, Certified Public Accountant Jefferson W. Wells is continuing to help small businesses and individuals alike with their investment and financial needs.

Wells began his firm in 1993 after leaving his role as chief financial officer for a local corporation.

“I started with no clients and at first, no idea where to find clients. But I aggressively marketed and very quickly built my accounting practice from the ground up,” he said. “In my former job, I was always the person saying ‘no,’ but in this job my clients are always glad to see me because of the benefits we bring them. It’s a good change of pace.”

In 1996, Wells was approached by an investment house that offered to broaden his clients and services with additional training and experience. He remained with that company for a while but said he ultimately branched out on his own to better serve his clients by giving his business a personal touch, which he prides himself in. Today, he remains an independent and is not affiliated with any investment house.

“Those investment houses seem to focus on selling what makes them the most money, not necessarily what gives their client s the best return,” he said. Wells and his staff handle tax and estate planning, business accounting, investment counseling and more for small- to medium-sized businesses and individuals alike. Wells is also securities and insurance-licensed.

“We handle all of our business clients’ financial needs,” he said. “We are thorough and committed to filing their work both timely and accurately.”

When it comes to investment planning, Wells’ goal is to insure that his clients’ money lasts as long as they do. “We work under the philosophy that as our clients get older, they should take less risks with their money and be wary of alleged planners who try to put them into investments that offer more risk than they are comfortable with taking,” he explained. “Investments should provide sufficient liquidity for the clients’ retirement needs.”

Wells carefully reviews his older clients’ tax and investment information with the goal of reducing or eliminating taxation on their Social Security benefits, as well as reducing their tax burden and risk, while increasing the income of their investments.

The local CPA also has a large tax practice whose clientele is evenly made up of individuals as well as corporate or trust accounts. “That [tax] side of our business continues to grow every year,” Wells said. “We also prepare taxes for nonprofits.” On the accounting side, his services consist of not just taxes, but bookkeeping, compliance reports, contractor licensing, business and payroll returns and more. The company also offers payroll services.

In all of his work, Wells said he wants his clients to know he is there to meet their needs. “We’re here year round,” he said. “We always answer the phone, and all calls are promptly returned. We pride ourselves in our service to our clients.” He added that he is always happy and available to welcome new clients into his practice.
