The Picketers

about Clay Bennett...

The son of a career army officer, Bennett led a nomadic life, attending ten different schools before graduating in 1980 from the University of North Alabama with degrees in Art and History. After brief stints as a staff artist at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Fayetteville (NC) Times, he went on to serve as the editorial cartoonist for the St. Petersburg Times (1981-1994) and The Christian Science Monitor (1997-2007), before joining the staff of the ...

Unions only want the employees at Volkswagen to be members as they need the money to shore up the retirement plans of the wealthy retired union members in Detroit. All unions do is add cost to products making them unaffordable for the people they claim to represent. Do not be fooled by these dishonest union thugs. They do not care about the best interest of the employees at Volkswagen.

Hey, Bennett, why did you leave out this one: Remember Detroit!

July 18, 2013 at 7:50 a.m.
joepulitzer said...

Cities: Poor Detroit. It hasn't had any good news for decades, and now, despite a $77 billion bailout of the auto industry, its population continues to implode. The No. 1 reason: the United Auto Workers union.

Census data released Tuesday show Detroit's population has plunged 25% since 2000 to just 713,777 souls — the same as 100 years ago, before the auto industry's heyday. As recently as the 1970s, Detroit had 1.8 million people.

What's happening is no secret: Detroiters are fleeing an economic disaster, the irreversible decline of the Big Three automakers.

In his now-famous Super Bowl commercial for Chrysler, rapper Eminem drives up to a theater in a sleek new 200 model and says, "This is the Motor City. And this is what we do." But, sadly, that's no longer the case. Detroit's decline has been shocking.

Sure, a lot of the blame goes to a generation of bad management. But the main reason for Detroit's decline is the greed of the industry's main union, the UAW, which priced the Big Three out of the market.

As recently as 2008, GM, Ford and Chrysler paid their employees on average more than $73 an hour in total compensation. The 12 foreign transplants, operating in nonunion states mostly in the South and Midwest, averaged about $42 an hour.

Guess which manufacturers are healthiest and expanding their market today? In 2008, the Big Three still made 59% of all cars in the U.S. But, according to recent estimates, their market share is now 46% — with foreign companies selling the bulk of all U.S. cars. So Detroit's loss has been the South's and Midwest's gain.

Behind this is the gold-plated benefits package once guaranteed to UAW workers. We're not against workers getting what they deserve, but total pay and benefits for a full-time worker for the Big Three until recently averaged about $140,000 a year.

The transplants? Just $80,000. Add in an estimated $2,000-plus per car for retiree health care and pensions for the Big Three, and the cost gap is huge.

Two years ago, the Center for Automotive Research estimated that for every job created by a foreign transplant, 6.1 jobs were lost by the Big Three — many of them in Detroit. No city can take that much economic abuse.

Nor has the $77 billion bailout of GM and Chrysler — which enriched the UAW at the expense of bondholders and shareholders — helped. True enough, sales have bounced back some, but neither one is out of the woods.

Even as Detroit collapses, new UAW chief Bob King promises to "pound" the transplants into submission and force them to drink his union's poison, too.

Given what we know, every town that is now home to a foreign automaker should be very afraid. If King has his way, they'll soon suffer Detroit's fate.

Two words...

Works Council.

I'm amazed at the number of people who are concerned about any discussion of unionization or Volkswagen's own efforts to set up a works council, that have no association with the plant at all.

Who are these people holding symposiums to try and discourage any idea of unionization? They don't appear to be Volkswagen workers.

It clearly would be a mistake for the workers to allow the UAW to come on in at this juncture, but why are outsiders even a part of the equation?

The Chattanooga plant is the only one that Volkswagen has in operation that does not have a Works Council panel. Every other plant they own is union represented and the unions work with the Works Councils.

Why not here, if Volkswagen has the desire for it to be allowed to happen?

Wow, imagine that. A corporation that actually encourages discourse between workers and management. This is not only alien to American corporations, but totally befuddles workers in the Deep South who take it as a badge of honor to support policies against their own interest.

German companies, with their tradition of union/company cooperation, are properly mystified at the reluctance of conservatives to embrace a system which includes the workers voice in the workplace.

Oh, and also the German constitution mandates that companies must work with employees in decision making under the Works Constitution Act. http://www.worker-participation.eu/National-Industrial-Relations/Countries/Germany/Workplace-Representation

Imagine that. Of course it probably would not work in the Deep South where workers are not encouraged to think for themselves. Sad.

A Works Council by VW standards could be a positive thing. Letting the UAW run it is a sure fire way to drive away one of Chattanooga's biggest economic engines. We will become the pariah of the South amongst the other automotive manufacturers. You will never see another automotive OEM, Tier 1,2 or 3 supplier even consider this town for a plant. Volkswagen was the first foreign automotive manufacturer to plant roots In America. There were blunders on both sides, but ultimately it was the UAW "Us vs. Them" mentality that sunk the Westmoreland, PA VW plant. Chattanooga is the first VW plant in America since 1987. They were so burned by the experience, lets make sure it doesn't happen again.

When the people try to put the blame on the US workers' getting benefits, what WERE the SALARIES OF THE CEO's and the Managers doing also? WE, have to advance to what is happening now and look closely at the conditions that the Global Economy and our $42 Billion to $46 billion dollar PER Month trade deficit is causing.

Did the the US consumers have a voting voice when the elected "leaders" of this Republic were negotiating with the lower monetary value countries, (for our American corporations) to create the free trade agreements and the global economy.

Thus, making it legal for the US corporations to invest in these Foreign countries, building manufacturing plants, while forming global corporations to get their name "brand goods" manufactured outside the US. First, it would appear that there was certainly a "well" designed plan for these companies/global corporations to stop manufacturing their goods here in the USA ( not all of their

manufacturing because there had to be people working to buy their "so called cheaper goods) and importing their goods while closing their plants here in the USA. These free trade agreements kept/keep increasing, while the "designed trade deficit" with the global corporations kept accumulating and creating the conditions here in the USA, known as the "race to the bottom."

If there were not the US corporations trying to make their maximum profit possible and US consumers looking to buy the lowest cost imported goods by the global corporate monopolies, then we would still have more of our manufacturing jobs here in the USA and not having to reverse where the goods that we have over consumed are made. What are the American consumers doing to help reverse the trade deficit with the global corporations other than running out of money? Our main goal, in my opinion, should be to re-create our manufacturing jobs here in the USA with everybody making the sacrifices to reduce the wage gap between the workers and the "CEO's" to less than the 300% to 400% that it is now.

Look at Detroit, and that's what unions did for the American auto industry. The factories are closed and the city is bankrupt.

The former Ford plant along the freeway in Atlanta is closed also, because it was uneconomical to update it, given the local workforce.

This region has finally got a good thing going again for people who want to work for a living instead of living on the government dole while taking potshots at each other downtown.

I know that all you liberals would really rather have dump trucks full of money delivered to your doors, along with all of the intoxicants and easy sex partners you could think of, but that's not going to happen in our lifetimes.

The path to happiness for a man is to have a stable 35-40 hour per week job, paying him enough to live without pinching every penny, and only leaving him a few hours every weekend to enjoy his family. He needs something to do that means something to him, and for the vast majority of people around here, Volkswagen provides that opportunity.

The only discrimination left in this country (which is a GOOD THING) is the lack of economic opportunity that people impose on themselves.

Those poor Germans with their mostly homogeneous society and their work ethic are out of touch with mainstream America. I hope it stays that way long enough to have an influence on our failing society.

Poor and drug-addled are the "New Crazy." Pass it on.

Apparently this anti Obama group's willingness to accept and then rewarding the people who can come up with the most false/negative misinformation against President Obama, will be accepted by the powerful group of voters who are also trying to convince the majority of the other voters to also take their same path of making decisions based on LYING?

Why not here, if Volkswagen has the desire for it to be allowed to happen?

I think VW would be receptive to a works council without the UAW involvement which U.S. labor law makes difficult if not impossible. The UAW needs the VW people a lot more than the VW people need the UAW. UAW leadership, lawyers etc. need the revenue to support the life style to which they have become accustomed. They have no skin in the game at VW and can promise people nothing except to interfere with the company trying to stay competitive and viable. Unions today are a lot like politicians with an objective to stay in power and like a sucker fish live off the work of the people they are supposed to be representing.

Facts about racism and black crime.

An analysis of 'single offender victimization figures' from the FBI for 2007 finds blacks committed 433,934 crimes against whites, eight times the 55,685 whites committed against blacks. Interracial rape is almost exclusively black on white — with 14,000 assaults on white women by African Americans in 2007. Not one case of a white sexual assault on a black female was found in the FBI study."

Though blacks are outnumbered 5-to-1 in the population by whites, they commit eight times as many crimes against whites as the reverse. By those 2007 numbers, a black male was 40 times as likely to assault a white person as the reverse.

If interracial crime is the ugliest manifestation of racism, what does this tell us about where racism really resides — in America?

And if the FBI stats for 2007 represent an average year since the Tawana Brawley rape-hoax of 1987, over one-third of a million white women have been sexually assaulted by black males since 1987 — with no visible protest from the civil rights leadership.

Today, 73 percent of all black kids are born out of wedlock. Growing up, these kids drop out, use drugs, are unemployed, commit crimes and are incarcerated at many times the rate of Asians and whites — or Hispanics, who are taking the jobs that used to go to young black Americans.

Are white vigilantes or white cops really Black America's problem?

Could Black America's problem be a lasting result of hundreds of years of oppression? Do you really think that oppression is gone?

Just because the Civil Ricghts act was passed forty years ago did not mean that instantly a whole segment of society would be up to a level equal with white Americans. This is something that will require another century of progressive work to overcome. Education is key. This nation owes much of its existence to the free labor that we took advantage of. We have not come even close to repaying that debt. A free college education for every black child for the next 50 years would be a good step forward.

The answer I would offer is no that isn't black America problem. However, it is America's problem. We may need to quit separating Americans in neat little labels or boxes so the media, politicians and others can easily identify them. Violent crime is an American problem with the root cause in homes and a dysfunctional education system.

That would be OK but we first need to get all races in school getting a good high school education and prepared for college. Too many are passing that cannot read, write and do simple math. Schools do nothing to teach responsibility and accountability. There are just as many failing and problem white children and in numbers alone there are more.

It is amazing that states allocate lottery money to college scholarships and ignore or cut short those grades essential to prepare for college. It seems the money would be better spent if a at grades K1 through 12. However, that would require not allowing those currently funding these grades to reduce their contribution.

Good point Falmon.

What one poster said was "A free college education for every black child for the next 50 years would be a good step forward. I cannot figure out why anyone would think anything is free. Someone has to pay for everything. The lack of education for blacks or anyone in America is not the issue. The issue one has to have the perseverance to take advantage of what is available to them. In America there is no charge to the students of parents for those who attend public school. One does have to put out the effort to make the grades to have access to a college education and the scholarships available. So a "free" college education does will not work if the student does not work. The idea of anything being free is stupid. By the way, obama, holder and Condelezza Rice made it in America and they were black so the idea of blacks or any race playing the victim roll is obsolete.
