Chattanooga-area juniors win state

A 10-member team of Chattanooga area all-stars won the Tennessee PGA Junior League State Championship on Monday at WindStone. The area team defeated a team from the Tri-Cities 11-1 in the semifinals and then beat a Knoxville group 6 1/2 to 5 1/2 for the championship. The area team of Beck Lewis, Evan DeGraff, Jesse Felker, Cade Puryear, Parker Gray, Peyton Ogle, Harrison Williams, Jack Fortune, Emma Brown and Bennett McNabb advances to a regional tournament Aug. 17-18 in West Virginia. "It's the most nervous I've been on a golf course in a very long time," said WindStone head pro Jeff Craig, who coached the team. "It was a full day of golf. We had all levels of junior golfers from just above beginners to state players."

Northwest fourth

The young golfers from northwestern Georgia slipped from second to fourth out of seven sections in the second day of the 40th annual GSGA Junior Sectional Challenge Match that ended Tuesday at The Georgia Club in Statham. The East ran away with the championship, totaling 51.5 points to 40.75 for the second-place West. The Southeast golfers had 36.75, the Northwest 36.

LaFayette's Jacob Morgan was seventh individually in the boys' 16-18 age group with a 150, and LaFayette's Gage Smith in 12-13 and Calhoun's Gunter Jordan in 14-15 each tied for eighth at 152 and 158. Calhoun's Kate and Molly Mashburn were fifth and seventh in the girls' 12-13 and 11-under competition, respectively.

Four-Ball postponed

The Rossville Kiwanis Four-Ball tournament at Moccasin Bend has been postponed until Sept. 28-29 due to a lack of entries. "We normally expect between 75 and 80 teams; 65 is our break-even point, and we were at less than 40," tournament director Dennis Dyer said. "We felt that in order to maintain the integrity of the tournament and to be able to raise the money for our many causes, we really needed to take a look at another date. It's not a decision we take lightly. We needed to regroup and listen to what te players were telling us and make it as good as the tournament has been in the past."

Brown tops Lookout

Winston Brown defeated John Williams in a one-hole sudden-death playoff to win his third Lookout Mountain Golf Club championship Sunday. Each shot a 3-over 145 and defeated Scott Smith by one stroke.

Scenic City 18

The Chattanooga Times Free Press is seeking input for the Scenic City 18, a project designed to combine the best golf holes from courses in the area into ideal 18-hole combinations. One Scenic City 18 will feature holes from private courses. Another will cover public courses from as far south as Calhoun and north as Manchester, as far west as Fort Payne and eastward to Chatsworth. Area aces

Jerry Massingill knocked in his first hole-in-one in 50 years of playing golf last Wednesday at Brainerd. He used a 5-iron for the 114-yard shot on No. 14, witnessed by Frank Atkins.
