Who golfs? Tampa native Barbara Marshall

Golf has been an important part of Barbara Marshall's life for more than 50 years.

She grew up beside a golf course in Tampa, began playing the game as a child and still plays.

"My father was a golfer and my brother was a golfer, and as a family it was important to us," Marshall said. "I think it's a wonderful sport. It's relaxing because it's you against yourself in nature and you don't have to have a team. It's a great way to exercise and a great way to relieve stress."

Marshall's daughter never picked up the game. But her son-in-law loves to play, and that passion has been passed along to Marshall's grandchildren, including 14-year-old Jared Thomas.

"When he goes and plays, I tell him, 'It's not whether you win or lose, it's the character you show while you're playing,'" Marshall said. "It's all about character."

She remembers befriending current University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior Jordan Britt at WindStone Golf Club.

Marshall has volunteered at the Ringgold Telephone Company Junior Classic for at least six years. Tuesday she shuttled golfers up the hill between the 10th green and 11th teeing ground.

"I like to encourage these young kids and build relationships with the young players," Marshall said. "I enjoy it so much I take three vacation days to help with the tournament."
