SUMMERVILLE, Ga. - A man fell to his death Wednesday while working on the roof of an addition to the Mohawk Industries plant at 106 John Bankson Drive in Summerville.
"The information is pretty limited right now," Summerville Police Lt. Tim Fulmer said Thursday. "The details are pretty sketchy."
"It was apparently accidental," Fulmer said. "He just fell through an opening in the roof."
The man, described as Hispanic and in his early 20s, fell about 1:20 p.m. and was taken to Redmond Regional Medical Center in Rome, Ga., where he was pronounced dead, Fulmer said.
The man worked for a contractor involved in a factory expansion that's supposed to add 500 jobs over the next five years. The Mohawk facility recycles plastic bottles into fibers used to make carpet.
Bald eagles saved after nest falls
SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. - Wildlife rehabilitators have rescued two bald eagles whose nest fell 75 feet to the ground during a thunderstorm.
The Mountain Press reported American Eagle Foundation volunteer John Prickett received an anonymous phone call Monday, saying a nest behind a supermarket on Winfield Dunn Parkway had blown down.
Volunteers found the 6-week-old birds within an hour. One had wing fractures. Both were taken to the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine for treatment.
Hundreds seek Ferris wheel jobs
ATLANTA - Hundreds of people lined up in Atlanta on Wednesday, hoping to land a job at a giant Ferris wheel that soon will soar over the city near Centennial Olympic Park.
WSB-TV reported applicants at the job fair were vying for spots as greeters, loaders, concession and maintenance workers for the tourist attraction.
The businessmen bringing Skyview Atlanta to the city say it could be in place as early as June. Rides are expected to cost about $12 and last about 15 minutes.
DeSoto park activities heat up
FORT PAYNE, Ala. - Officials at DeSoto State Park announced the park's seasonal lineup of activities for June and July.
On Saturdays and Sundays, the park's partner, Goldstar Enterprises, will lead kayak and canoeing trips above DeSoto Falls from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CDT. More information is available at 256-845-5075.
