His tournament began with a birdie.

National network television coverage showed former University of Tennessee at Chattanooga golfer Steven Fox's putt live with an announcer remarking that the U.S. Amateur champion began the U.S. Open better than defending U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson and defending British Open champion Ernie Els.

But Fox's tournament will end in the same fashion as each of the other seven PGA Tour event he's played this year.

He missed the cut.

After his first round was delayed by darkness, Fox finished his opening 18 holes Friday morning at 6-over 76. He followed that Friday afternoon with a 4-over 74. Fox, who won the U.S. Amateur last August, made a birdie on No. 10 and bogeys on five other holes as he tried to be the first modern-day Moc to make the cut in a Major.

Fox is expected to continue playing as an amateur next week at the Traveler's Championship in Hartford, Conn., and remain an amateur at least long enough to defend his title of U.S. Amateur Champion.
