Weapons charges sent to Monroe County grand jury

MADISONVILLE, Tenn. - A man who was never charged after a 2009 shooting that killed one person and injured another has been bound over to the Monroe County, Tenn., grand jury on weapons charges.

Joshua Anderson, 31, will face two misdemeanor weapons charges in separate incidents on April 19 and April 30 in Madisonville.

According to court testimony Tuesday, Monroe County Detective Doug Brannon said Anderson was in the woods near his home April 19 armed with a loaded 9 mm semiautomatic handgun for which he did not have a concealed-carry permit. Anderson told authorities that six people dressed in camouflage clothing had been stalking him, Brannon testified

Monroe Deputy Wes Martin testified that on April 30, he saw Anderson standing outside his truck. Martin knew Anderson was wanted on an arrest warrant so he stopped and took Anderson into custody. Martin said he found a loaded 12-gauge shotgun in the truck along with a 2-foot machete and an 111/2 inch knife.

General Sessions Judge Reed Dixon sent charges involving the handgun and shotgun to the grand jury.

In 2009, Anderson shot and killed Vince Cole and badly wounded Cole's friend Danny Adams in a confrontation at Hidden Lake Campground in Tellico Plains, Tenn.

Anderson was never charged or even interviewed by police in the shootings. Instead, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office charged Adams with homicide, asserting that he started the fight that led to the shootings. A jury last year found Adams not guilty of homicide but guilty of assault for hitting Anderson as he was pointing a gun at Cole.

Since Adams' trial, Cole's family has been pushing to get Anderson charged in the death.
