about Clay Bennett...

The son of a career army officer, Bennett led a nomadic life, attending ten different schools before graduating in 1980 from the University of North Alabama with degrees in Art and History. After brief stints as a staff artist at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Fayetteville (NC) Times, he went on to serve as the editorial cartoonist for the St. Petersburg Times (1981-1994) and The Christian Science Monitor (1997-2007), before joining the staff of the ...

I hate racism! Anyone who criticizes Herman Cain, Alan Keyes, or Thomas Sowell is racist. Likewise anyone who criticizes Walter Williams, Allan West, Thabiti Anyabwhile, or Mike Higgins. And anyone who criticizes Phyllis Schlafly or Michelle Bachman is sexist.

As for Paula Deen, if she's changed, good for her. By her account, she's probably used the unspeakable word (and I don't mean YHWH) less in the last 20 years than the black men I worked with last year did in a week.)

Humanity seems to subdivide into subsets, then each subset becomes critical and sometimes demeaning of the others. I grew up with the racism of the South and took it as normal until my middle teens. I'm not sure that it ever goes away completely.

We had a Chinese exchange student live with us and I was quite surprised to hear her say "I don't like white boys." She said it without malice, but it was certainly racist.

I exchange emails with a retired school teacher from Columbus Georgia and some of her comments are so politically incorrect that I cringe after having adapted to Canadian avoidance of political incorrectness.

Paula Deen is just a product of her times and her environment. I would like to think that the younger generation is more accepting, but maybe that is just wishful thinking.

Political correctness is overdone. Who decided certain words are politically incorrect? Does the label politically incorrect imply that politicians decided some words were offensive to some people therefore should be avoided? If I and others are offended by the use of a word would the word become politically incorrect? Would saying Yankees are like hemorrhoids they come down and won't go back up be politically incorrect?

What was the reporters objective or intent with the question? Paula Deen fell into a good thing when someone saw an opportunity to exploit her name in the food services business. I am guessing not one person here over 50 has not used a word in the past that is not now considered politically incorrect. Why do comedians and rappers get a free pass?

Paula Deen is a liberal who campaigned with President Obama in 2008 and has had Michelle Obama on her show.

Liberals and Democrats love to say how it conservatives and Republicans who are the racists and bigots and when on their own are exposed like Deen has been you get liberals like Nucanuck who make excuses for them.

June 22, 2013 at 8:01 a.m.
alprova said...

Being a bigot and a racist are two distinctly different mindsets. Of course there are people who frequently exhibit traits of both mindsets, but most people are simple bigots who prefer to have people like themselves around them.

Referring to someone who is black with that connotation does not indicate that one is necessarily a racist. It does indicate that they are at the very least, sways in the direction of bigotry, and then perhaps for as long as it took to use the word.

Uttering the word should not brand anyone for life as an indication that one is permanently a bigot or a racist.

Now your good ole boys who don white sheets were racists. They preached racism. They even used the Bible to justify their racism.

A racist believes that they are intellectually or physically superior to those of other races. A bigot simply does not care for those of other races, when race is the source of their bigotry.

I haven't followed what Paula Deen admitted to very well. I'm aware of the lawsuit and the charges ladled against her. I think it was a mistake on her part to respond publicly to the charges with any admission of using the word in her past.

Since there is probably not one single person alive in these United States, who is old enough to be aware of the word, who has not used it at sometime in their life, I find the punishment that has been exacted against her, so far, to be just a wee bit over the top.

Not renewing her contract past the end of this month was a bit harsh, because not all of the accusations against her have been aired in court.

Each and every one of us opining on this issue today can maintain that we would never do as she did, but I'm betting that we all have used the word more than once in our pasts as well.

I'll be one of those who admits that I have, but I have steered clear of doing so for several years. Today, I detest that word as much as I do the "c" word to describe someone of the female persuasion, when someone desires to refer to one in negative terms.

And lastly, it would be preferable if people would refrain from making this a political issue. I don't care who you are, or your chosen politics, no one on either side of the aisle, or somewhere in-between, everyone is very likely to have used the word at sometime in their life.

Let's none of us get holier than thou.

Paula Deen is a celebrity. Her admission has cost her dearly. I hope that in time, she will rebound somewhere else.

I'm confident that anyone who criticizes her today, is most likely a blooming hypocrite because we are all humans and prone to lapses of judgment when we are comfortable around others.

However both are committed to being politically correct to avoid alienating potential voters. Neither party is willing to differentiate between the high percent of the total on welfare that could be self supporting but won't and those that would if they could but can't.

I may not have very much regard for any of those on your list, but you don't seem me posting comments on a daily basis to anything any one or all of them have written or said. I don't see any of my fellow Liberals doing it either.

But a day does not go by, that you and others cannot refrain from citing your latest outrage and accusations toward the President of the United States of America, regardless of a thing he has said or done. He's guilty of anything and everything, without a shred of evidence to back it up.

This investigative report is much more important then the issue with Paula Deen. The link below is an investigative report from an Indiana TV station titled "Tax Loophole Costs Billions." A more accurate title should be "Illegals Are Committing Income Tax Fraud, Which Costs U.S. Billions Each Year."

This is outright fraud when nieces and nephews are children who do not even live in this country are being claimed under the earned income tax credit.

As you will see the IRS knows this fraud is occurring and nothing is being done except our great politicians want to grant amnesty to the same people who are stealing from us. Let's keep rewarding bad behavior.

I don't trust him. I won't post the long list of campaign promises he has not and will not keep. For example at the last convention he said; "We will reform and strengthen Medicare for the long haul, but we'll do it by reducing the cost of health care, not by asking seniors to pay thousands of dollars more."

The truth is Medicare beneficiaries will pay more with revamped co-payments and deductibles plus increased taxes and premiums.

Not to worry. They're already working on turning Hispanics, Asians, (even new middle eastern arrivals) and anyone else they can find against blacks in preparation for the next major election. They tried to use poor whites and blacks to turn against Hispanics using the illegal-immigrant argument, but that sort-of-kind-of backfired and didn't pan out. So the next move is to turn everyone, even middle easterners (the next big voting population) against black folks. Heck! They may just get lucky and stumble on the perfect storm for an American style holocaust. Wouldn't be at all surprising. They've been working creating just the perfect atmosphere for most anything to happen, by playing the sibling rivalry game.

Accused of sexually simulation with an éclair, referring to a teen worker as a *piece of pu@@y. Using the "n" word to refer to the president of the U.S. etc.

Although I don't necessarily support her losing the show. The matters did need to be addressed.

example/excerpt from daily mail uk online: The lawsuit alleges Deen hired Jackson to plan her brother's wedding and then told her: 'What I would really like is a bunch of little n*s to wear long-sleeve white shirts, black shorts and black bow ties. If you think ending a war is as easy as starting one, you're quite naïve. It doesn't work that way. Fighting in Vietnam was still ongoing well into the latter '70s long after Americans had been told war had ended there. It takes more than just the president to end a war. It takes a collective effort and agreement from all involved parties. War is big BIG business. For a very very long time it was rumored, and some still believe to this day, that President Kennedy's assassination had something to do with his attempts to end the war in Vietnam.

If you're not a man and it was your wife, mother, sister, daughter you would be all over Deen like starch on rice. You'd be documenting and gathering evidence to file with the EEOC accusing Deen of creating an unsafe, volatile work environment.

Here's the entire story from UK mail online/a brother accused of sexual and other inappropriate behavior along with alcoholism and allegedly cocaine abuse:

Personally I wish the lady well. I also wish she'd have known better and been more professional. You can't run a business like your whipping your slave on an old plantation where they're powerless to speak out.

degage said... jjmez, you are right , the Vietnam war continued after we had totally pulled out. Our troops were gone but Saigon didn't fall until 75 and we pulled out in 73. I had family in that war and one of them was of the last that pulled out. The war in Iraq is still raging two factions against each other. Third world will never find peace. I agree with most that we need to keep our nose out of the middle east.

Thanks

Like you, I too had several family members too in Vietnam. Reminder: Although power nations appear to officially pull out when we're told the war has ended, the fighting continues and they remain involved ins some shape and form sometimes for years if only by proxy.

degage, explain what is racist about that he said. Can you define the word "racism?" His statement wasn't even bigoted in nature, since he does not indicate any overt and conclusive hatred as the reason why he might want to see white babies and mamas die.

If my memory serves me correctly, the man you are quoting was very much against black men becoming sexually involved with white women.

He had as much contempt for black men who were involved with white women and who sired children with them, as he did for the women and their offspring.

I'm in no manner defending his remarks, but racism did not enter into the equation. He was against the mixing of the races. One who believe in racial purity is not a racist.

He just doesn't want to see his race diluted by the white race.

alprova said: Again, it is being abused by domestically produced Americans as well. Don't just blame illegal immigrants.

Well said.

And to add: The powerful invite those illegals here to break unions and drive down wages, then they want to kick them out of the country when they've had some level of success at doing both.

But those illegals aren't dumb. I can recall a local company that hired a lot of immigrant workers, possibly some illegal, and drove off all their long time employees away. The immigrants came in droves, then when another company was hiring at higher pay, they left in droves leaving the company stranded and went to that higher paying company. That company never fully recovered from trying to screw some of the best well trained workers they had. Who'd worked there for decades. They thought the old workers would be desperate enough to return at lower wages, but by then the workers had moved on with their skills and found even better, higher paying jobs with even better benefits.

Fairmon wrote: "The truth is Medicare beneficiaries will pay more with revamped co-payments and deductibles plus increased taxes and premiums."

I have mentioned that I handle the financial affairs of several senior citizens. Every one of these people has a supplemental policy that covers every cent of their doctor bills and hospitalizations. Nothing is paid out-of-pocket in co-pays.

Working with the supplemental insurers, I am now getting all but a very few prescription drugs supplied to them in ninety day shipments, with not one cent in co-pays. For most, insulin is the only prescription that does not come without a co-pay. But in each case, I get 90 day supplies of 70/30 shipped for about $116.00.

The supplemental policies are costing between $200 and $250 a month. They have saved the seniors I know, thousands of dollars in medical bills. The savings are out there. You just have to take the time to delve into the details to find them.

alprova...I am aware of the A thru N Medigap policy options. I am also aware of the increases that have and will occur. Also, those making withdrawals from their 401K or IRA to pay off a house or to cover a major expense will pay a higher Medicare premium for all income over something around, $85,500. Wealth redistribution is in full bud in Social security and Medicare/Medicaid and will be in full bloom by 2015. Those with very low incomes can and should get help with premiums and prescriptions but there is abuse galore in these programs as well.

Al, How can you give this guy a pass? He was not talking about mixing races, his words said nothing about that. You must not have seen the video of him when he was ranting. He was calling white people all kinds of names. reverse racism.

alprova...I am familiar with Medi-gap options A thru N and I am familiar with the fact the premiums have increased and will be increasing. People are not aware of a wealth distribution item where anyone with an income form any source including a 401 exceeds $85,500 will pay a higher premium.

jjmez says "Not to worry. They've been working creating just the perfect atmosphere for most anything to happen, by playing the sibling rivalry game." of all the BS I've read on this site, this is the most outrageous load of it I have seen.

Another loophole inserted into the new version of the “Gang of Eight” immigration bill allows Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano (or any of her successors) to nix the construction of a required border security fence if she does not find it to be an "appropriate" use of resources. Does anyone really believe these DC cats really want to secure the border? Hmmm?

PlainTruth, You are insulting minorities by claiming their votes are being bought in exchange for tax dollars, you're just too much of a coward to admit it. Everyone sees through this cheap act and minorities will continue to avoid your party because of it. Anything else you'd like to say to further alienate them?

And accusing me of being someone's shadow account? Please. George Soros pays me for each post.

I'm not giving him a pass. I am simply pointing out that not everything that everyone says that involves the skin color or the use of a derogatory name, is racist.

The word is over-used and improperly applied to situations that are not remotely racist in intent.

Was that man a racist? He might be, and in fact, I believe he does feel that he is, but at no time did he offer in that video that he was superior intellectually or physically to white people, which is the definition of a racist.

"He was not talking about mixing races, his words said nothing about that. You must not have seen the video of him when he was ranting. He was calling white people all kinds of names. reverse racism."

Oh yes he did...

He definitely called for killing white people, but that in and of itself is not racism. It might well be a potential act of terroristic threats, but he was indeed directing his comments to black men who were in the company of white women at the time of his diatribe.
