STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. - Police say a 2-year-old boy is in stable condition at an Atlanta-area hospital after being shot in the abdomen during a robbery attempt outside a supermarket.

DeKalb County Police Chief Cedric Alexander says the boy's father tried intervening in a mugging outside a Kroger store in Stone Mountain at about 1 p.m. Wednesday. They said the suspect later fired between eight and 10 shots into the passerby's car. One of the bullets wounded the man's 2-year-old son.

Witnesses told police the boy was carried into the supermarket and was placed on a checkout counter where a pharmacist offered first aid until an ambulance arrived. The shooter fled.

The boy was in stable condition Wednesday at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston.

Authorities said they were hopeful that a surveillance system recorded clear footage of the gunman.
