Jordan BrittUniversity of Tennessee at Chattanooga golfer Jordan Britt will take on top-seeded Kendall Martindale this morning in a quarterfinal as match play began Wednesday in the Tennessee Golf Association's 81st Women's Amateur Championship at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin. Britt defeated Lindsay Davis 6 and 4 in her opening match Wednesday and topped Ooltewah's Maddi Everts 1 up in the round of 16 to advance to the quarterfinal round. Baylor's Blakesly Warren won her first-round match with a 1 up win over Kelli Pemberton of Knoxville, but Warren lost 1 up to Sarah Harris in her second match. Jessica Cathey of Soddy-Daisy also won her first match 2 and 1 over Nashville's Rachel Johnson before losing to Knoxville's Allie Knight, who defeated Lee University golfer Madison Alexander in the first round. Lee's Courtney Shelton won beat Abbie Gregory of Goodlettsville 2 and 1 in the first round before losing to Franklin's Courtney Chandler in the round of 16.
Academics
• University of Tennessee at Chattanooga outdoor track athletes Patrick O'Brien and Rachel Greenwall and women's golfer Mette Kryger were among the 14 Southern Conference spring-sports participants with 4.0 cumulative grade point averages. Other Mocs and Lady Mocs making the academic all-conference team for the 2013 spring season -- with 3.3 or better GPAs -- were track athletes Morgan Buchanan (3.97), Rebecca Greenwall (3.92), Mark Cole (3.85), Nathan Wanuch (3.61), Ambria Reese (3.49), Kelley Stewart (3.46) and Jessica Philpott (3.39); tennis players Jenna Nurik (3.91), Kaylene Chadwell (3.79), Claire Mulyadi (3.78), Alexa Flynn (3.55), Jackson Tresnan (3.49) and Stephen Crofford (3.31); softball players Ninjja Suetsugu (3.64), Stephanie Rieck (3.62), Sara Poteat (3.52) and Kaiti Dutton (3.38); and golfers Alex Ratliff (3.47) and Jordan Britt (3.34). Also earning academic all-conference honors were Wofford tennis player Sarah Evans (3.79) from Chattanooga, Wofford baseball player James Plaisted (3.41) from Tullahoma, Georgia Southern baseballers Stryker Brown (3.68) and Garren Palmer (3.57) from Dalton, Ga., and Samford track athlete Lucas Sieb (3.53) from Scottsboro, Ala.
Baseball
• The Chattanooga Cyclones 15-under baseball team wound up 6-1 in pool play at the Perfect Game Wood Bat nationals with a 5-1 win over the Denny Pritchett Jayhawks and then a 9-0 win over On Deck Baseball. Brett Barbree got the pitching win and Mitch Dunn recorded a save against the Jayhawks, when Noah Hill scored twice and Brandon Dendy had an RBI hit. Against On Deck Baseball, Hunter Oliver homered, doubled and knocked in four runs. Mitch Duncan had a double and two RBIs, and Hill had two singles and scored twice. The Cyclones advance to the 24-team playoff round after tying for first in pool play but losing the top seed on the tie-breaker.
Wrestling
• Jackie Fargo, one of the top professional wrestling draws in Chattanooga and across the South in the late 1960s and '70s, died Monday morning in a hospital near his home in China Grove, N.C. According to Memphis superstar wrestler Jerry Lawler, who described Fargo as the one who taught him the ropes of wrestling and showmanship, Fargo died two days before his 83rd birthday. He reportedly had a heart condition for years. A North Carolina native whose supposedly insane brother "Roughhouse" Fargo joined him in the ring at times, Fargo earned acclaim as "The Fabulous One."
