EDITOR'S NOTE

Barry Courter has a 24-year-old son who is a college graduate and a 19-year-old daughter who is a sophomore in college.

Q: Dad, everyone says you have to have a college degree, but why?

A: Well, there are entire books written about this. There are also scores of examples of people who were very successful without a degree. It can depend on what you want to do as there are some fields and some companies that demand a degree. The old adage that it is more important who you know can also hold true. If nothing else, working towards a degree very often leads to a career, and often a better paying one.
