Randy Haynes takes lead in FLW Tour event

Randy Haynes of Counce, Tenn., took the first-day lead in the Walmart FLW Tour at Lake Chickamauga presented by Chevy with a five-bass limit totaling 23 pounds, 8 ounces Thursday. But Dan Morehead of Paducah, Ky., is only one ounce behind in the tournament operating out of the Dayton Boat Dock, with Casey Martin of New Market, Ala., third at 22-15 and Mark Rose of West Memphis, Ark.; Bill Day of Frankfort, Ky.; Steve Kennedy of Auburn, Ala., and Justin Lucas of Guntersville at 22-13, 22-11, 22-10 and 22-3. Day had the day's big fish weighing 8-13. Spring City's Wesley Strader is 19th at 18-7, and Dayton's Andy Morgan, leading the Angler of the Year standings, and Michael Neal are 22nd at 18-1 and tied for 28th at 17-6. Jason Johnson of Gainesville, Ga., leads the co-anglers with 19-8. Shane Winchester of Glasgow, Ky., and John Kite of Festus, Mo., are second and third at 18-11 and 18-7. Richard Peek of Centre, Ala., is 17th at 13-11.

• The FLW organization's Walmart Bass Fishing League All-American is being conducted out of Ross's Landing, and Corey McDonald of McDonald, Tenn., is fifth after Thursday's first round with a five-pound bag totaling 18 points, 1 ounce. Chris Wilkinson of Farmersburg, Ind., took the lead with 20-10. Shawn Gordon of Russellville, Ark., is second in the grand finale for the Saturday-only anglers from 2012 with 18-12, and Lionel Botha of Okeechobee, Fla.; Maurice Freeze of Concord, N.C.; and Kerry Milner of Bono, Ark., are at 18-4, 18-3 and 18-0.

Golf

• University of Tennessee at Chattanooga golfer Jordan Britt knocked out qualifying co-medalist and 2011 champion Kendall Martindale in the quarterfinals of the Tennessee Women's Amateur tournament Thursday at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Knoxville, 1 up, but then lost by the same score to Sarah Harris of Hermitage. Harris, who won 6 and 5 in her quarterfinal match, plays today for the championship against the other co-medalist, Courtney Chandler of Franklin. Chandler won 4-3 in the quarters and 1 up over 30th-seeded Emily Miller of Livingston. In the first-flight semifinals, Cleveland's Linda Mullins and Manchester's Ashley Gilliam lost 6 and 5 and 2 and 1, respectively to the top two seeds, Cookeville's Anna Cunningham and Frankin's Siarra Stout. Chattanooga's Kristy Snow lost 3 and 1 to 11-year-old Angelina Chan of Franklin in the second-flight semis.

• Chattanooga golfer Scott Stevens is tied for second at 69 after the first of two rounds of stroke-play qualifying at the Tennessee Match Play Championship at Nashville Golf & Athletic Club in Brentwood. Former champion and Hixson resident Josh Nelms -- now of Spring Hill -- is in a four-way tie for fourth at 70 in the quest for making the low 16 and match play Saturday. Belmont University senior Elliott Wickenden from Knoxville shot a 66 on Thursday, and University of Tennessee senior Brandon Rodgers is tied with Stevens. McMinnville's Brett Patterson, another former champ, shot 72, and Chattanooga's Tom Schreiner and UTC's Davis Bunn from Knoxville are in a group sharing 21st at 74. In the Match Play Senior Championship, Tennessee Wesleyan College basketball and golf coach Mike Poe is tied for second at 72, three strokes behind Knoxville's Steve Golliher.

Baseball

• The Chattanooga Cyclones did not make the playoff round of the Perfect Game Wood Bat 15-under Nationals, losing on a tiebreaker despite tying for first in their pool. Their 6-1 record in the tournament included a 13-2 win over Toros Baseball in which Alex Darras drove in four runs with a double among three hits and Cade Evans also had three hits and scored three times. Noah Hill drove in three runs and Hunter Oliver doubled, singled and batted in two, while Justin Glover and Cade Evans did the pitching.

Boxing

• Olivet Baptist Church pastor Kevin Adams will take on former professional boxer Jay Bell in a boxing exhibition Saturday at 3 p.m. in Howard's Henry Bowles Gymnasium, with proceeds going to the fundraising drive for the Howard marching band's uniforms. The doors will open at 2 p.m., and the Stars of Chattanooga young singing group will perform. General admission is $5 with ringside seats going for $20. Adams has a black belt in taekwondo and has worked out and sparred with Bell, a longtime friend, in the past. Bell is a Howard alumnus; Adams graduated from Brainerd High. Y-CAP director Joe Smith is providing the ring for the exhibition.
