The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball team got only one hit in an 8-0 loss to Central Arkansas but then edged Northern Kentucky 2-1 as play began Friday in the Mercer University Bear Classic at Macon, Ga.

Sophomore Taylor Deason (7-5) got the pitching win for the Lady Mocs (8-8) with four hitless innings in relief of freshman Rachel Albritton, who allowed only two hits and an unearned run in her three innings. The Lady Mocs finally got their first run in 21 innings in the sixth when Tyler Templet singled with one out, went to second on a groundout and scored on Kasey Tydingco's double to right-center field.

In the bottom of the seventh, Anyssa Robles led off with a single for UTC and her pinch runner, Yoshi Hooks, took second on a Kati Dutton sacrifice bunt, moved to third on a Stephanie Rieck single and scored the game-ending run on Alyssa Taylor's single through the middle.

Templet was 2-for-3 in the win. Ninjja Suetsugu was 1-for-1 for the Lady Mocs' only hit in the earlier game, when they were tied before Central Arkansas had a six-run fifth inning off starter Deason in which the first baserunner came with two outs. A single, an RBI double, another single, a walk and an RBI single preceded a grand slam by Sarah Bigej.

Two throwing errors in the sixth led to two Bears runs and an early end to the game.

UTC faces host Mercer at 12:15 today, and then the tournament's four teams will go into playoff mode with the top seed from the round robin facing the No. 4 seed and the 2 and 3 seeds meeting. Third-place and first-place games are set for Sunday.
