Cash, Vines claim another 55s title

Wes Cash of Chattanooga and Mark Vines of Lynchburg, Va., continued their recent run of men's 55 tennis doubles success with a 6-1, 6-4 championship win Saturday against second-seeded Richard Barrett of Deatsville, Ala., and Jeff Davis of Treasure Island, Fla., in the Raymond James Super Senior Grand Prix in St. Petersburg, Fla. Cash and Vines, four-time USTA national champions last year, were the No. 1 seeds. Cash, seeded fourth in singles, lost 7-6(4), 6-2 to No. 2 Davis in a 55 singles semifinal.

• The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis team lost for the first time in 2013 on Friday, 4-2 at Appalachian State, leaving both teams 8-1 overall after the Southern Confernce opener. ASU pulled out the doubles point with a 2-1 edge in three close matches and then got singles wins at Nos. 1, 4 and 6. Kaylene Chadwell won in doubles and at No. 2 singles for UTC, and Kayla Jones breezed to the No. 3 victory. The Lady Mocs are scheduled to host Western Carolina at noon today at the UTC courts.

• The UTC men's tennis team won 4-3 over defending league champion College of Charleston on Saturdayat the Racquet Club in Hixson. The Mocs (6-3, 1-0) pulled out the doubles point and then singles wins from Roberto Vieira, Manuel Barroetavena and Chris Smith at Nos. 1-3. Barroetavena with Jackson Tresnan and Stephen Crofford with Ankit Chopra were UTC's doubles winners.

Basketball

• Their 13th victory in a row gave the Lee University Lady Flames 30 wins and the Southern States Athletic Conference basketball tournament championship Saturday in Montgomery, Ala. Lee (30-2), ranked seventh in NAIA Division I, beat Southern Polytechnic 76-60 in their farewell to the SSAC as tournament most valuable player Jenna Adams had 23 points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots in her 14th double-double of the season. Hollie German scored 20 points and Brooke Hamby had eight assists for the Lady Flames, who will learn their national tournament draw Wednesday. Ashlie Billingslea and Sarah Ogoke scored 25 and 20 points for the Hornets (25-5).

• The Cleveland State basketball teams completed their regular seasons with wins Saturday in makeup games at home against Jackson State, the Lady Cougars securing a No. 4 seed in this week's TCCAA/region tournament by winning 70-39 and the Cougars earning a No. 3 seed with a 54-44 victory. Dantario Dansby scored 13 points and Filipe Goncalves had 11 points and nine rebounds for the Cougars (18-9, 11-7), while Trey Suttles had eight rebounds, Travis Jones dealt seven assists and Kahan Swift made four steals. They will play Thursday in the tournament at Motlow. The Cleveland State women (18-9, 11-7) will play Chattanooga State on Wednesday. Me'Lisa Martinez scored 14 points and Robyn Anthony had 13 points and eight rebounds Saturday for the Lady Cougars. Chattanooga State's men, who with the Lady Tigers beat Jackson State on Friday, will play Tuesday, the tournament's opening day.

• Shyra Clark from Cleveland High School scored 14 points off the bench to lead Carson-Newman to a 56-50 women's basketball win Saturday against Wingate. Cleveland's Ish Sanders scored only six in the men's game, a 63-52 Eagles loss, but Cody Henegar from Marion County had 12 points and three blocks.

• UTC women's basketball coach Wes Moore will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday at Finley Stadium, on the heels of his 12th Southern Conference championship in 14 seasons. He will be talking about this week's conference tournament, and the public is invited. Attendance costs $10 with a meal, $4 without. The club will not meet on March 11.

• Boyd-Buchanan School, which hasn't qualified to play a TSSAA boys' state basketball sectional since Ricky Perry was coach in the 1990s, won't be playing at home as planned this year, either. School administrator Joe Pope said Monday's game against Clarkrange is being moved to Chattanooga State. "We put tickets on sale and they sold out in about 30 minutes," Pope said. "Chattanooga State came open today, so we decided to move it since it holds more people." Game time will remain 7 p.m.

Soccer

• King College women's soccer coach Simon Duffy announced late this week the addition of Baylor School all-state midfielder Shalisa Barnett to the three signees announced two weeks earlier, including UTC transfer Hailey Nichols from Oak Ridge. Barnett, who's from the Cayman Islands, played as a junior and senior for Baylor, including the 2011 state champion team that was ranked third in the nation by ESPN. "Her high school and club experience should allow her to make an immediate impact," Duffy said in a King release. "She is calm on the ball, has a strong range of passing and is a good modern-day center midfielder." Of Nichols, another midfielder who like Barnett has played for Knoxville's FC Alliance and was all-state in high school, Duffy noted, "Hailey will bring a wealth of talent and knowledge to our midfield this fall. Her athleticism, vision and composure on the ball will add a very important dimension."

Baseball

• Danny Canela hit a three-run home run in the eighth inning to give Lee University a 4-1 baseball win Saturday at Belhaven after the Mississippi team won the first game 1-0. Myles Smith allowed just three hits in six innings in the loss for the NAIA's third-ranked Flames. Clint Terry allowed three also in his six innings in game two, when Andy Hillis got his fourth save of the year.
