Peter Murphy, incumbent District 9 Chattanooga City Council candidate, answers questions during an editorial board meeting at the Chattanooga Times Free Press.Former City Councilman Yusuf Hakeem and incumbent member Peter Murphy are evidently headed for an April 9 runoff in their race for the District 9 City Council seat.
They each received more than 49 percent of the vote, but officials with the Hamilton County Election Commission said that to be elected a candidate must have 50 percent of the vote plus one.
Hakeem's vote total was 1,030 and Murphy's was 1,024. There were seven write-in votes.
The provisional ballots have yet to be counted, and the commission has up to four days to complete that. The number of those ballots was unknown.
