Alstom Power is restructuring its operations and cutting approximately 80 employees at its Chattanooga turbine manufacturing facility, plant employees were told today during a staff meeting at the company's Riverfront Parkway plant.

Our news partners at WRCBTV reported 80 as the number of jobs being eliminated.

Tim Brown, director of communications for Alstom, confirmed that the company "is restructuring operations" but he declined to discuss any details prior to an afternoon news conference.

Alstom invested nearly $300 million over the past three years in its newest Chattanooga facility, which builds turbines for nuclear, fossil steam and gas powered plants. The new plant has more than 150 employees.

But with power sales lagging, sales of new nuclear power equipment have fallen short of expectations when the plant was built.

Alstom also has an adjacent, but separate boiler operation that employs more than 500 employees.
