UTC's McLennan SC golfer of week

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga freshman Emily McLennan from Queensland, Australia, was chosen the Southern Conference women's golfer of the week after tying for ninth place in the JMU Eagle Landing Invitational last weekend at Orange Park, Fla., with a 73.7 stroke average. The Mocs play this weekend in Gainesville, Fla.

• The Lee University men's golf team finished fifth out of 15 schools in the Sand Shark Classic tournament Monday and Tuesday at the Oldfield club in Bluffton, S.C. Host USC-Beaufort won by seven strokes with an 880 total; Lee totaled 906. Flames sophomore Hunter Vest tied for eighth individually at 221, and Taylor Davis and Matt Emery had 227s.

Softball

• Despite a home run, a double and four RBIs by Anyssa Robles, the UTC softball team lost 11-8 to Quinnipiac on Wednesday at Clearwater, Fla. Then the Lady Mocs (14-12) fell 9-1 to Fordham with a triple by Sara Poteat and singles by Robles and Sarah Beth Roberts as their only hits. Against Quinnipiac (4-13), Alyssa Taylor was 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored and Poteat was 2-for-4 and scored twice. Pitchers Kaisey Carson and Taylor Deason gave up 14 hits and 11 earned runs to the Connecticut team, which broke a 4-4 tie with a seven-run sixth inning. Rachel Albritton got the last four outs, three on strikeouts, without allowing a baserunner, but was the starter and loser against Fordham (12-9). The Lady Mocs open SoCon play Saturday and Sunday at Furman.

• Lee University split with Shorter University in a softball doubleheader matching former Southern States and future Gulf South Conference rivals Wednesday in Rome, Ga. Shorter (19-3) ended the Lady Flames' 18-game winning streak to start the season with a 7-3 victory in the first game. Lee came back and won the second 11-4. Ana Coscorrosa was 3-for-5 for the Lady Flames in the nightcap with a home run, five RBIs, two runs scored and two stolen bases. Jennifer Ringle was also 3-for-5, driving in one run and scoring three after having a double and two RBIs in the opener. Meg Macias went 2-for-3 with two RBIs in Lee's win and Charlie Wooden had a double and drove in two runs. Dominique Hannah was 4-for-8 in the two games with a triple and three runs scored. The Lady Flames' Lexie Dean was 2-for-4 in the first game and scored three runs in the second game when Jessa Watts was the winning pitcher.

• Reinhardt senior Maddie Monroe from Calhoun, Ga., was the Appalachian Athletic Conference softball pitcher of the week for the 11th time in her career after going 4-0 with three shutouts, a 0.26 earned run average and 28 strikeouts in 27 innings. She added another shutout Tuesday and is 11-0 for the season with 11 earned runs allowed and 94 strikeouts in 78 innings for the Lady Eagles (20-3, 4-0).

Baseball

• Casey Mannion had a grand slam and Brandon Bush and Ryan Whitt had two hits apiece as the Chattanooga State baseball team defeated the visiting Shorter junior varsity 16-3 on Wednesday.

• Cleveland State sophomore right fielder Chase Edwards was the TCCAA baseball co-player of the week after going 7-for-14 with two homers, a triple and two doubles in last weekend's series against Southwest Tennessee. He's batting .459 with 16 extra-base hits and 19 RBIs for the season.

• Tennessee Wesleyan senior Corey Rhoney repeated as the AAC baseball pitcher of the week and TWC junior outfielder Trey Griffin was the player of the week for their work in a 5-2 span for the NAIA's top-ranked Bulldogs. Rhoney allowed six hits and struck out six batters in six shutout innings in a 3-1 win over Milligan and now is 3-0 for 2013 with a 2.86 ERA. The 6-foot-4 Griffin batted .400 for the week with a home run, three doubles and eight RBIs. He drove in five runs in a 12-4 defeat of Milligan and was batting .308 with six extra-base hits and 14 RBIs going into Wednesday's home games against Ohio Christian and UVA-Wise. Wesleyan (20-6) won those 10-0 and 2-1.

• Bryan College lost 4-0 and 5-3 in an NAIA baseball Tuesday at Campbellsville. Hunter Tipton was 3-for-3 and Joey Underwood was 2-for-3 in the first game for Bryan, and Blake Johnson had a two-run home run while Cody Rhinehart was 1-for-2 with an RBI in game two.

• After a 17-3 win Monday against Cazenovia in the RussMatt Invitational tournament in Florida, the Sewanee baseball team is scheduled to play Lesley at 9:30 this morning. Monday, Michael Walker was 4-for-5 with two doubles, three runs and two RBIs, while Jack Rogers was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and Blake Williams was 2-for-5 with three RBIs for the Tigers (5-9). Grant Goodson and Allen Thigpen each was 2-for-4 and scored twice, Goodson adding two RBIs. Pitcher Jacob Simpson allowed three hits and one run with eight strikeouts in his six innings.
