Ooltewah outside hitter Karly Newman said from the beginning of her senior year that she dreamed of being able to continue her volleyball career at the college level. Her vision became a reality Thursday when she signed scholarship papers with NAIA first-year program Dalton State.

"It was close to home but far enough away to get the college experience," Newman said. "My family can come see me there, and I can go see them."

Newman was a two-year starter for the Lady Owls, who advanced to the Class AAA tournament after winning the District 5 and Region 3 tournaments last fall. In the last two seasons Newman totaled 357 kills, 745 digs and 109 aces.

"Karly is an outstanding young lady," Ooltewah coach Elaine Peigen said. "She's a great role model and a wonderful student-athlete to coach. She's very determined. She never gives up. She's relentless when it comes to achieving her goal."

Hubert going to Berry

Berry College near Rome, Ga., will be fielding a football team for the first time this fall, and Ooltewah defensive back Adam Hubert will be among the Vikings' pioneers. Hubert signed a letter of intent to join the NCAA Division III program at the high school Thursday.

Hubert, who has a 3.3 grade point average, was pursued also by Division III colleges LaGrange and Maryville, which already have football teams. He said he remembered Berry being represented during a college fair at Ooltewah during his sophomore year, but at the time the school was only speculating about football.

"It became a lot more appealing when football came into the equation," Hubert said. "I went down there, and as soon as I stepped on campus I was impressed. Anyone who's been there can tell you how beautiful it is."

Hubert had two interceptions and 12 pass breakups from free safety his senior season and helped the Owls get to a Class 5A state quarterfinal. He was Ooltewah's coach's award recipient last year and was also the team chaplain.

LFO pair finalize plans

Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe football players Randall Eaker and Daniel Parrish secured their college futures this week. Eaker, a three-year starter in the secondary who also played receiver, signed a letter of intent to attend Macalester College, a Division III private liberal arts school in St. Paul, Minn.

Parrish, a receiver/tight end, will attend NAIA member Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tenn., after leading the run-first Warriors with 27 receptions for 298 yards.
