UTC splits with Furman

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball team split a doubleheader at Furman on Saturday to open the Lady Mocs' Southern Conference schedule.

UTC llost the opener 4-0 but bounced back for a 6-1 win.

The Paladins struck for four runs on six hits and an error by UTC right fielder Stephanie Rieck in the third inning for all the scoring in the first game. The Lady Mocs got two hits apiece from first baseman Kasey Tydingco and left fielder Sam Taylor, but the offense never got going.

Sophomore pitcher Taylor Deason allowed 10 hits and two walks in the loss.

In the second game, the Paladins again jumped ahead with a run in the bottom of the first inning off Rachel Albritton, but the freshman settled down and held them scoreless the rest of the way.

UTC (15-13) took the lead in the second inning with three runs on two hits and two Furman errors and added another run in the third on an RBI fielder's choice by Alyssa Taylor, scoring Tydingco.

In the fifth inning, senior second baseman Sara Poteat added to UTC's lead with a two-run single to score Tydingco and Ninjja Suetsugu.

Designated player Anyssa Robles had two hits in the win.

The teams will wrap up the series in Greenville, S.C., today with a single game at 1 p.m.

• Lee 12-10, Southern Wesleyan 6-0: At Cleveland, Tenn., three Lady Flames pitchers combined on a five-inning two-hitter and Charlie Wooden was 2-for-2 with a home run, a double and four RBIs as Lee (22-1, 8-0) completed a sweep of the Southern States Athletic Conference doubleheader.

Meghan Macias and Savanna Bell each was 2-for-2 with an RBI and Dominique Hannah and starting pitcher Jessa Watts each was 2-for-3 in game two, when Ana Coscorrosa was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and matched Hannah, Lexi Dean and Wooden with two runs scored. Wooden also homered in game one, as did Hannah and three players for SWU (16-7, 3-1). Hannah was 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs, while Jennifer Ringle drove in three runs and Wooden and Bell each had two hits and two RBIs.

• Chattanooga State 16-12, Jackson State 5-3: At Jackson, Tenn., the Lady Tigers completed a 3-1 TCCAA series with Emily Dagnan going 5-for-6 with four RBIs and five runs scored and Haley Fagan and Shelby Willard pitching complete games. Willard struck out seven in five innings in game two, when Bailee Williams tripled and singled, scored two runs and batted in two and Marina Wilkerson doubled and singled and had two RBIs.

In the first game for Chattanooga State (17-9, 7-4), Siera Ford was 3-for-3 with a homer, three RBIs and two runs, Lacye Walker homered, doubled and drove in three and Shelby Robertson was 3-for-5 with an RBI.

• Columbia State 9-7, Cleveland State 1-4: At Cleveland, the visiting Lady Chargers (14-7, 10-2) won 4-1 and lost 3-2 Friday before beating the hosts twice Saturday. Mauro Ditto had an RBI single, Meghan Allen a solo homer and Amber Covington a two-run shot in the finale for the Lady Cougars (4-12, 3-9). Allen also homered and singled and scored the deciding run in their Friday win.
