Georgia State tops UTC in softball

Two early runs by Georgia State turned out to be enough offense against the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball team on Wednesday, as the Lady Mocs lost 3-1 in the mid-week nonconference game at Jim Frost Stadium.

GSU put two unearned runs on the board in the top of the first inning on two walks, a hit batter and one hit off UTC starting pitcher Kaisey Carson and an error by shortstop Alyssa Taylor to grab an early lead.

Senior shortstop Kasey Tydingco cut the Panthers' lead in half with a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning, but GSU pitcher Kaitlyn Medlam held the Lady Mocs (18-16) scoreless the rest of the way.

Sophomore pitcher Taylor Deason came in to relieve Carson in the third inning and gave up a run in the sixth inning on and RBI hit by Georgia State center fielder Jessica Clifton.

GSU catcher Callie Alford led the Panthers' offense, going to 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs. In addition to Tydingco's home run, UTC got hits from Sara Poteat, Stephanie Reick and Taylor.

UTC travels to Western Carolina for a Southern Conference series starting Friday with a single game and a double header Saturday.
