Baseball

• After a weird 7-6 loss Wednesday at the University of Pikeville, the Tennessee Temple baseball team stayed in Kentucky and got in two games -- both wins -- Thursday of its early-week snowed-out series at Alice Lloyd. The Crusaders (14-11) won 11-3 as Caden Shadrick went 3-for-3 with a triple, a double, three RBIs and two runs scored, Josh Thomas went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI, Brandon Blome went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Brett Bartley and Sean Leitstein each had two hits and an RBI. Hunter Giles pitched a complete game with six strikeouts, allowing two earned runs. Then Dylan Massengill threw a three-hitter with nine strikeouts in a 3-0 win in which Bradley Grant was 2-for-3 and Leitstein, Ryan Bruce and Trey Hill drove in runs. In Wednesday's game, Massengill was in for the save with Temple leading 6-3 when the center fielder slipped on the wet field on what would've been the final out of the game but became a winning inside-the-park grand slam.

• Cleveland State won 4-3 and lost 4-0 at Volunteer State in TCCAA baseball Thursday. Cody Hiefnar homered and singled in a run and Jared Davis and DeAndre Allen also had RBIs as the Cougars (17-13, 7-7) took a 4-0 lead in game one, and Chase Edwards' game-ending throw home from right field preserved the win for Brandon Zajac, who struck out eight and allowed one earned run. Bobby Towne got the save with a scoreless seventh. Josh Macurdy pitched a four-hitter for the Gallatin team in the rematch.

Volleyball

• Katie Curtin, a Dalton High graduate in 2011, has agreed to play volleyball for Dalton State College's first-year program. "It's close to home and the athletic program will bring more attention to Dalton and the school," Curtin said in a school release. Said DSC coach Bruna Langner: "Katie will be a player that will be able to play anywhere we need her. She is a girl with a lot of heart that loves volleyball." Curtin was a Beta Club member in high school and plans to major in health and physical education. Langner is holding tryouts for current DSC students on April 10 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. She wants an email (to blangner@daltonstate.edu) by 3 p.m. on April 9 from anyone planning to attend, giving the potential player's full name, age and class.

Golf

• Joey Woods of Knoxville defeated Ben Wolcott of Dickson, Tenn., by two shots last weekend at Chattanooga's Black Creek Club in the Tennessee Junior Tour's first Ashworth Elite Series golf tournament. Woods shot an even-par 72 on Saturday and a 70 on Sunday. Chattanooga's Scott Stevens had a first-day 68 and Signal Mountain's Mikey Feher was second at 70, but Stevens dropped to third at 146 and Feher into a tie for ninth in Sunday's wet, cold weather. Knoxville's Graham Gosselin was fourth at 148, and Chattanoogans Patrick McDonald and Lake Johnson were among four tied at 149. Play was suspended in the girls' division Sunday afternoon, leaving Columbia's Riley Rennell and Nashville's Alexandra Farnsworth co-champions based on their 113 totals for 27 holes. Rennell trailed Clarksville's Hanley Long by seven shots and Farnsworth by three after the first round but birdied four of her first eight holes Sunday. Long was third at 114.
